No Start

« on: February 05, 2011, 10:24:07 AM »
I was sitting in the garage after a nice ride in my 70 bug.  I had just got all my heat tubes hooked up and took it for a 45 minute ride around town with no issues.  I went back out to work on it a bit.  I have the 009 Dist with a 34Pict-3 Carb.  It's a 1600 DP motor from 72.

I started it and revved a few times and it was idling really nice....then died!  It has not started since.  I already had the parts so I went ahead and replaced all the ignition.  New coil, points, condenser, plugs, cap, rotor, and wires.

Static timing is set at 7.5 BTDC and I am getting spark at the plugs.  When I push the accelerator I get the jet of fuel going in.  I can put my hand on top of the carb and it's pulling vacuum, and I smell gas in the exhause.

So...it's getting fuel, fire, and air....and not even trying to start.  Am I missing a magic button somewhere?

maybe it was flooded from trying so long... have you come back to it recently to try again? cant be much at this point.. even if the timing is off or points arent perfect as long as they are in the ballpark you should be seeing something...

Thanks...found it tonight.  Timing was 180 off.  Purring like a kitten now.

???  How did it get 180 out while it was running ?

I suspect the coil was bad, because my miss was a little more than the 009/34 Pict dead spot.  Once I put it all back together, I had the timing 180 off

Maybe we haven't heard all the story. He's not saying what he found. I wonder if he had the dist. out before and didn't tighten the hold down bracket or the adjusting screw causing the dist. to move up and jump out of the dist.drive gear in the case.I have seen that happen. Maybe he will fess up ;D ;D
