If you are talking about the "Bar" across the tranny on the rear, It is not a sway bar. Its a aux. overload bar. In '67 The rear axles were longer and the rear torsion bars were not strong enough to hold up a full load in the rear of the car so VW added this bar to help out. The early '68's carried this bar until they finely installed stronger torsion bars in the middle of the year. Those things were a pain in the arse because all they did was rattle and bang because the bushings would come apart in about a year and at that time VW could not supply enough parts to fix them. When I was at the dealer they told us just to take them off. Now would be a great time to take yours off. They are worthless .
Lonnie, Do not be afraid to ask any kind of question. Some one here will help you out without leading you down "The Garden Path".
Where do you hang your hat ?

I hang my Hat in KALIFORNIA....inland empire.
I know most hate KALIFORNIA for the rules..and well everything....But no fear...it is comming to a town near you soon....lol
Tell me can I get away with running the bug Without
the Z bar (vw name) ?
Not all the parts are there

Thanks
I will run without  till I find all the parts to put it back to original. It won't be a racer just a Cruiser.
I received my new rear Apron today so I have plenty to do.
Thanks again   8)

Thanks for the help guys
I decided to just get a New transaxle so I have no worries when it is installed. New engine new transaxle and I will replace the clutch cable and get a bowden tube.
I think I will pull the pedal assembly to check/replace the clutch lever also.
Atleast when dealin with STOCK bugs the price is not too hgh

My bug now runs and shifts wonderful. I did find that Without the Bowden tube your Bug will not likely be able to Disengauge th clutch. Without the Bowden tube your cable will be too long to fully engage the throwout bearing with the Pressure plate. It MAY work Without a Bowden tube if you Shorten your clutch cable. Bottom Line is You NEED the Bowden cable
Again thanks for all the help.
Now on to replacing my Rubber Brake lines that leak..it just don't end does it ?
