Newby with a few VW Camper Questions

« on: March 03, 2009, 11:16:44 AM »
I recently purchased a 1970 Campmobile and so far I love it. I do have a few questions though and hopefully you can help.

Initial Questions:

1. How do I close the pop-top? Sounds pretty elementary I know but I keep catching a piece in the very front of the pop-top directly above the rear view mirror and it will not shut all the way. I'm not sure if a piece is missing or if I'm just and idiot, and at this point both are pretty good possibilities. I've looked for pictures of the piece I'm referencing that looks some what like two S shaped hooks one on the pop-top and the other on the frame but I'm not able to find anything online.  If anybody has any advice or any pictures of the for mentioned part I would appreciate it.

2. I have all the parts for the sink but none of them are together. Does anybody know where I can find a diagram for the sink-fridge so I can get an idea on how to put it back together?

3. Does anybody have an extra VW emblem for the front they might be interested in selling? I kind of feel like my bus doesn't have a soul without one.

4. Any horror stories around ordering a new canvas? I'm thinking of order a synthetic one from GoWesty.com. Thoughts suggestions?

5. Last my bus has all the normal rust problems around the lower quarter panels and under the front windshield. Does anybody know of someone around the greater Chattanooga area that does good body work and more specifically might have worked on your bus-bug that you can vouch for?

Thanks

Welcome, the procedure for opening and closing the pop top is described on page 12 of the Westfalia manual that came with the bus. If you do not have one, The Samba has one scanned: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/manuals70westy.php

New canvas is a good idea, but be warned they aren't the easiest to install.

I've attached this rough illustration to try and describe my issue with the pop-top better.  Let me know if it appears that a piece is warped or if you think I'm missing something. I'll try and add an actual picture of it this weekend.  Thanks

The bracket on the front left of the pop-top was broken and the two s shaped hooks in the front above the rear view mirror where bent and catching. I found a junked 1970 Campmobile in Maryville last weekend and was able to pull them off. If you need parts the guy would probably sale a whole thing for $100.

If you do the canvas yourself, get an electric or air-powered staple gun instead of lever action. You'll need your other hand to position the canvas and this makes shooting the many many staples easier. Also, spend the extra bread for stainless steel staples. Take your time installing and if you get a pinpoint weave canvas try to install it loose, as they always seem to shrink up.
