Topic: New to me rail with no rear torsion bars........HELP PLEASE.  (Read 2317 times)

Long story......bought a abused and dead rail, it runs now, shocks had been kidnapped off back end and steel plates inserted at max height........bought new set of coil over shocks, removed plates bolted shocks, dropped jack, went way lower than expected.

Popped torsion covers, wa-la, no torsion bars.

Rail is built on 70'ish (not sure year) IRS bug rear end......where and how much for stock torsion bars to put in.

Know where to get stonger coil over shocks to handle missing torsion bars?

I paid $400 for rail and second engine, so far have about additional $300 in tires brakes shocks, pushrod tubes....and misc.

Would love to keep this thing, but can't figure out cheap fix for rear-end.

I guess the first step would be to try some good used torsion bars.  If a stiffer rear end set-up is your goal, check out VW mags for some of
those West Coast Suppliers who cater to the rail/baja clients in particular.
I have noticed that they are now offering torsion bars with stiffer spring rates.
F.Y.I.: unless you're tail heavy in your rail, stock torsion bars and a set of coil-overs should get the job done nicely.

Like Rick said ,You can toss a set of used bars in, but remember you have to" set" them or you may have one set stiffer or higher than the other one.  Also one end of the bar has finer splines and they will not go in but way. You need to know the lenght. I don't know what style or model rear end you have ,so you need to have someone look at it to tell you what to get. Be careful because they are installed under pressure and I have heard of a few arms that ended up in a cast when the spring jumped off its "stop" and wacked that wrist . You will never see it coming.
