new sound i dont recognise.

« on: March 31, 2011, 06:27:09 PM »
Driving home today my bug started making a repeated thumping noise like when you are driving across grooves across the road. I thought it was the rough road and went on. I stopped at a light and the sound stopped. When I started I noticed it went away each time I shifted or took my foot off the gas pedal. I looked under and saw no lakes or bad tires or even the drive shaft coming loose. Any ideas would be helpful as this repaire will prolong my losing of the beetle.

I was hoping it was nothing bad like the engine about to blow. The way my luck with cars lately has been going this is good news. i will take a look and see what i can find. If any one else has an idea what it could be it would help me narrow it down before i end up taking it to Rick at R&M. Also if it is the cv joint will it cause any more problems if i have to drive it to R&M from Ooltewah.

When I bought Homer the Super Bus, all 4 CV Boots were bad so I bought a set.  5 years later Homer would start and stop at random making a hammering noise from the rear.  Sometimes it would hammer fast and loud and go until I slowed down or stopped, sometimes it wasn't as bad and it would stop on it's own but usually when it stopped, it would be when I hit a bump or pot hole.  After a 6 months of this (including a trip to Tampa, FL) I figured out the CV joints were worn out and the hammering was the axle sliding back and forth, banging and bounding off the flanges.

So . . . I got a new set of joints and pulled those new 5 year old boots out of the cabinet and fixed the problem.  Here's my main advice . . . once you have figured out what the problem is and buy the parts to fix it with, you might as well go ahead and do the work.  If you wait too long, you'll probably have to buy some more parts to go with what you already had and the job will be even harder.   ;D

^^^ So true, Zen.... and CV joints are a prime example of that.   ;)

Well i picked it up at R&M today and my beetle drives better than before. The odd sound is gone and seems to be quieter all around. He had to replace the two CV Joints on the passenger side rear. They were both completely dry and ready to be replaced. I might have to replace the other side in a few months but at least i can drive it to Bug-a-palooza and work now. Another thumbs up to Rick for his quick and great work.
