New Shocks!!!

« on: March 02, 2006, 07:43:51 PM »
Apparently my PM's are working. Well anyway I have stumbled on what seems to be a easy task of installing shocks, well taking them out anyway. Anyone got any suggestions on what kind of shocks to use now? I have them out and it took all of 35 mins. Let me know if you can. Thanks

I figured if you were left alone for awhile, you would get struts off. Are the springs still on the struts ?  Don't take them off without a spring compresser or your head and arms will deposited on the walls. No laughing matter :(

Well well, I am sure that no one wants the job of doing this. I guess I will have to take it to a third party lol. Anyway No i just took the shocks off not the struts man. lol.. SHOCKS!!! I guess that is what everyone  is thinkin leaving him alone eventually he will come through. lol.. Anyway I still have to do the front end, my shocks were worn out so i took this time to sand some of the rust down and paint the drums and the inside of the fenders with gloss paint. Anyway I will be taking off the ball joints, and the control arms and the sway bar next, then I will begin to take the struts apart. U are very mean david, helping others but not me. :( make me cry. Well anyway I will have to get someone to do the bushings and the strut exchange for me. Thanks, I will just order some KYB hydrolic like my shocks that will be in soon, brand new kyb's Can't wait to see how she drives out, I want to get the front end fixed before bp8 because I want to enter it, monday or sunday i will be putting in a day of vacation so i can have all weekend to play.. HAHAHAH

OK !   You took the shocks off ,but not the struts ?  Did you have a spring compressor to take the coil spring off ?  FYI the shock is inside the strut tower and cannot be replaced until the coil spring/top cover is removed. If you have managed to do this without a compressor without taking your head off, you need to get a job in Wolfsburg. Also I think you need to learn the proper name of each part and where/what they do so folks will know what in the hell you are talking about . You could post a pic. to show us what you have done.

Boy, glad to see u don't hold back LMAO.. David I haven't torn down the front because I put it back it was to hard for me to take apart, I took the rear tires off and pulled the what I believe to be the "SHOCKS" and ordered new ones, I had no ideal the front has shocks. I thought those were struts but I guess that is the whole peice, LOL... I will post a pic.. Sorry for the confusion, After I get the rear what I believe to be shocks in and replace the what I believe to be bump stops then I will be moving to the "front" where I will be taking out the control arms? And having you or someone else replace the bushings, and bead blast it and paint them both, and do my struts and I will put them back in... Thanks... But for now I am on the rear my "shocks" are SHOT.. lol

OH !! I thought you were still working on the FRONT STRUTS.  You are right ,the rear of the car has SHOCKS absorbers. More than likely you have a insert cartridge, that is replaceable, inside the STRUT tower .
Don't you attemp the front strut job until you understand whats going on.
I'm serious about this. You can really mess yourselve up BIGTIME

David, how about this, once I get the strut tower loose I will bring you the strut tower and the controls arms, I will mark the camber bolts, then u can bead blast these items and paint them like new, I want to use gloss black though, I will supply the paint.. I won't go and un loosen the dreaded center nut, that will result in death or hurt myself really bad... Thanks for the concern... I will let you do it but once I get them off do u think we can get them back before bp8? I would love to get them back in and get the front end aligned and then I will be set. Thanks.. I have to order the parts unless u can get them for me..

Check it out everyone, amazing what sanding some rust out and painting something makes it look new, and yes david I know u will say something about the gloss, but as for this I wanted it to be gloss, but the engine not. And I will be taking the engine out again because MACCO painted my engine up and I want to repaint where there spatter is. Flat black for that.. I love that gloss look. Look SMelly.. NOTICE the JACK STANDS. NOthing but SAFETY....

well got the new shocks installed now, took her down the road, wow what a nice ride so far that the new KYB gas shocks give her, plus not rubbing my tires, lol.. Anyway the front end is next after i put the new bump stops on the rear and new brake lines on the rear.. LOL. I hope to have it done by bp8 but I don't think I will :(

Hello everyone, once again I came out. I have now gotten both struts off the car and that one messed up tie rod end which i will replace or repair, anyway Also I have found that that the  Strut mount? Or the PAd? With the bearings built in was locked up on the side that the strut was leaking on, anyway I am going to buy new ones and then have a smooth turning system. Thanks...

HOw do u get this thing out? I am doing one at a time.

Look, head still attached somewhat, LOL....

If the early super struts are like the later ones, the cap at the top screws off.  There probably is (or was) a special tool for removing them, but if I remember correctly, I clamped mine in a vice (be careful, you don't want to crush the housing) and used a big pipe wrench on the cap.  Once the cap is off, the strut insert just pulls out and slide the new one in.

Aaron, Just in case you don't find a insert after you jerk the strut apart , but just a shaft with a bunch of pistons and small pieces, don't worry about it. Its just a indication that your struts are still factory. Just dump all the stuff out along with about a Qt. of oil.  If your new insert has a lot of clearence at the top. like a 1/4 inch or more ,there should be a nylon bushing in the box to take up the slack. Just push it in between the insert and strut housing. The different brands of inserts cause this. A little tip ,clean the heck out of the threads on the housing. Cross threading  the cap is very easy to do.

Yea david,
I have cleaned them and now painting them, man the passenger side strut you can hold it and watch the piston go down, and on the insert at the top where you were talkin about a bushing, there was a metal one that took up the slack then just came right off, and also i will include a pic of the struts, and i noticed there on one strut there was a small washer that sits underneath the bearings and then a thicker one under that, well I am missing that one because someone i guess took these things apart and robbed me of  the good strut inserts that was in there, and the qt of oil was correct look... Also that cap wasnt hard to take off, i just took a small screwdriver and tapped it with a hammer a little and she loosend up...
