Need someone to restore my 73 Super Beetle

« on: September 06, 2007, 05:29:37 AM »
I need someone to restore a 73 super beetle I received as an anniversary gift. I will be removing the engine on 9-7-07 and will be looking for someone to replace the driver's pan, do minor body work, replace all rubber, headliner, wiring and paint. I will be keeping this bug so it must be done right. I'm not in a hurry so time is not an issue but quality is.

I'm sure other things will need to be replaced/repaired as the resto gets into high gear so please only respond if you can tackle this project with confidence. Due to health issues I can no longer tinker in my shop so I have to hire someone to do it for me. Looking for a fair price for quality work. If interested please e-mail me at jge@chartertn.net or call Glenn @ 706-217-7412.

Thanks,
Glenn

This restoration thing is getting to be a real problem around here Glenn. The last dedicated VW shop, Lockhart VW, closed last year .   I don't know if there is a shop around here who does PROPER body work . Mechancal stuff is not a problem. There are a few folks who can handle mech. things, some are OK ,some are not.
I to have had a health "glich" and have had to slow down a bit, but can handle engine/tranny work without a problem alot due to having the right "stuff" to do the job like align boring cases, cly head work etc.

Also, looking for someone for my 73 superbeetle. I can help with it. I know very little as far as body work and all that. I am a computer tech. not a mechanic. But, I am willing to try and learn. There use to be a VW place in RED BANK but, I think they also closed. If anyone is interested let me know. My email is Nixonphotos@aol.com.

Thanks,
Richard

Well here we go again on this restoration thing.   There just has to be a person or persons who would take on VW body stuff and do it right, but dang if I know where they are or who they are. I can see why maybe they are hard to find. Could be that its not worth their while to invest the time for the limited amount of work they would have restoring just VWs.
I'm afraid that you Fellows who want to do a ground-up restoration on your air-cooled VWs and are mechanically challenged or have  other reasons are going to have a hard time getting the job done correctly as far body work goes.
The rest of mechanical work like engines, transmission, brakes etc. doesn't seem to a pose a problem.
I keep hearing about shops outside our local area, but who are they and where are they and do they do quality work ?
We can only hope that someone will start somethng local.
When I had my VW repair shop back in the '80s, the body work problem exsisted even then.

It's more then just body work. I need someone that knows about superbeetles to go over mine and tell me what needs done. Again I am computer smart, and photography smart, not car smart. My wife wanted the VW so, I bought it for her when she had her surgery. I am going to go looking for a wiring harness for it today. I am doing some body work myself.

Well we could look at it for you.   Does this "critter" function ?    Whats with the wiring ?   You bought this car because you wife wanted it ?  I have heard that story before many times. How long did it  take you to convince your wife that she needed this Bug ?   I think at least 50% maybe more Bugs in this club are owned by the wife. Funny , I never seem to see them driving their Bugs. Only the Hubby. You might as well "fess" up.    OK,OK, Im' just messing with you

We all buy our VW's for our wives.  We spend so much time working on the darn things ,  it makes us too tired to be un faithful.
If you replace any of your  Super parts that are still good, you can donate them to Stupie and get a tax write off.

Not inexpensive though! Many have seen Rich's handywork at Bug-a-paluza though, in the form of Terry Wakefield's "Best Paint", "1st in class" and "Best of Show" awarded '66 beetle!

hope this helps.

I never knew who did the restoration, but I remember the car . . . If I had to sum up the job they did on that 66 in one word it would have to be Quality.  Judging by that quality, I would guess that "not inexpensive" would be a conservative statement . . . but then doing anything the "inexpensive" way can get expensive the third or forth time around.  Trust me on that one!
