Need a key for your VW?

I was suprised to find that Rick's Lock and Key on East Brainerd road (near Brainerd Village) has VW key blanks in stock. Whey had about 8 blanks that fit the profile for my '78 Westy (Well, they've probably got 6 now...) They can cut them on the fly for you and guess what...they work!

Alternatively, I think Zen scored a pile of VW blanks on eBay a while back, so if you are looking for keys check with him too.

Need a key for your VW?

On the subject of keys and locks, I learned something new last night.

Herb, Kyle and myself tore apart several bus door handles and keyed the door locks from a 68 double cab to use the same key as the ignition.  As you may know, 1968 Bus door handles are one year only.  They are a little harder to get the tumbers out of the lock (has a clip ring and set screw that newer handles don't have), and the tumblers are slightly different from 69 and later handles.  The principle of the lock is the same and the pins are identical to later bus locks.  So, for a 68 bus, you have to use 68 handles and tumblers, but you can get your spare pins from any bay window bus.

Also, locking engine lids from later buses have a unique tumbler, but use the same pins.  The problem we ran into is the only tumbler we had for this lock would not accept the profile of the key we wanted to use.  I believe that if you pull the cap off of the tumbler (it's crimped on) and use a small file on the existing notches in the end of the tumbler, that problem will be cured too.  But it was late so we left it for another day.

Oh, and one other thing I forgot to mention . . . some bay window bus handles have a tiny set screw that holds the tumbler in place.  If you get it to the point it looks like it should fall out and it still won't budge, check for a set screw.  A couple of them had some blue paint over them (I guess that was for warranty purposes so the dealer could tell if the lock had been messed with).

Anyway, it was interesting and I learned a little more about VW locks and keys.  If anyone has any door handles they want to re-key, I'll be glad to help.

In Sweetpea, I have 3 different keys
1 for ignition
1 for front and sliding doors
1 for rear hatch
A little inefficient, but I'm going to leave it as it is.

Oscar uses only 1 key for all the above.  The only problem is that I have lost some pins (and maybe some other parts) in the front passenger door tumbler.  It didn't work when I bought Oscar...when I put the key in, the tumbler turns and turns and turns and eventually will come out, but the door will stay locked.

I think that I would like to see if I can fix it.  Zen? ???

It sounds like the screw came out of the back of the tumbler.  On late buses, the little lever that locks/unlocks the latch is all that holds the tumbler in.  The hardest part of fixing a bus door handle is removing it.  You have to remove the door pannel and take out two allen head screws from the inside.  Once it's off, it's an easy fix.  I'll be glad to help, and I'm pretty sure I have the parts you need.

Here's a good eBay page to keep an eye on if you need anything VW lock related:

http://cgi6.ebay.com/ebaymot....0cs.com

It's Gabriel Garcia's auctions.  Gabriel owns Gabriel's VW Garage & Locksmith and was featured in either Hot VW's or VW Trends a few months back.  He auctions mostly original key blanks, but I have seen him auction pins, tumblers, and other lock related parts.  Right now he has an original 1936-40 VW Cogwheel Logo KDF key.  He also has some neat plastic key covers that will make your generic late 60's-early 70's key blanks look like real VW keys.

Thanks to the knowledge and to the sharing thereof, I can now lock and unlock the passenger door on Oscar.  I just followed Zen's instructions like an apt pupil.  And yes, the entire door panel had to come off to remove that handle...which was minus the set screw and lock mechanism.  No problem, I just used one from the several used handles I purchased at the Florida Bug Jam.
Thanks, Zen! :;):

So. Travis, you're the one who snatched up all of the bus door handles I was looking for at the show. I thought it strange there weren't but a couple that I found. ???

Last year I bought 5 or 6 bus handles in various conditions (everything from very good, just needing a key to broken triggers to good handles with missing tumblers to almost totally trashed but complete) and didn't pay over $2 for any of them.  I got a couple for just 50 cents each!

But this year I only ones I saw were good ones with keys.  They were going for WAAAAAY too much money for me.  Now I know where all of the cheap "parts" handles went!   ???   Oh well, seeing how I only made it home from Florida with 21 cents, it's probably a good thing y'all bought 'em up from me!   :D
