NB Headlight Replacement

Friend of mine has a white 2000 New Beetle named Cottonball with a burned out headlamp on the passenger's side. Is the replacement a dealer-only job? It appears to get to the headlight bucket you've got to basically remove the fender and front bumper. Has anyone attempted this themselves or should I tell her just take it to the dealer?

Changing the bulb is a very simple process (that doesn't make it easy though).  Nonetheless it can be done yourself in a matter of minutes.  Simply unhook the strap at the back of the headlight assembly (latch style lock).  Then push in the locking button on the slide bar (it is a knurled area on the black leaver sticking out of the side of the headlight).  While you are pushing that in, slide the bar up the side of the assembly.  While you are pushing up the bar, the headlight will push it self out of the bumper.  When the bar is pushed as far as it can go, you can grab the headlight assembly at the front and work it out.  Unplug the assembly and open the lid on the back.  A spring type wire holds the lights bulbs in.  Just unplug and replace the bulb (careful not to touch the glass part of the bulb).  Install in reverse order.  If you need any help just let me know.

:questions:  Aren't those tools that only availble to VW Dealerships?

  Some of us have to use the standard 4 foot pry bars and large sledge hammers from the local hardware store! :turn:

She's taking it to Tri-State Import in Cleveland and Joe's going to replace it for her for $25. Thanks for the input though

Shouldn't the dealership be using metric tools (like a one meter pry bar)?  Personally, I don't care if I'm changing a headlight bulb, pulling an engine, or replacing a fuse, at some point, I ALWAYS need a hammer!

I know someone that just recently (appx. 4 months ago) put the xenon bulbs in and it melted the housings on the NB. :(

Be careful if any replacers out there opt for this mod.
