My tie rods are untied

« on: November 20, 2007, 03:23:46 PM »
While doing the brake spreader thing today,   I noticed my right wheel is alot shimmyer  than my left, .  I prefer both my front wheels to shimmy in harmony.   Its either the ball joint or the tie rod or both,  or neither,  The Tie rod looks kind of easy ..   Can I change that?  Can a big nylon tie around it  help  some?.    Can I tighten the nut under the tie rod?

By the way. I smell like gas, i"m flammable and my hands have no natural oil on them anymore.  Due to working on the toy van.  I hate fuel injection, its bad technology,  it does not work, I'm starting a movement

Yep, You can replace some of the tie rod ends some you can't. You have to buy the whole rod.  Get some PB-Blaster and soak them down. Some have right hand thread some left hand thread.  When you get one to move, count the turns out and put the new one on the same amount of turns. This will get you close.
    They can be tough.

I put a new tie rod end on the shake breaky  wheel.  I used my eye ball to align the wheel. I'm sure its not straight,   Anyone got a  "Triangle Tip"  to tie rod replacement and wheel align?   SC

After you've got the tie rods replaced and the adjuster(s) on them freed up, jack up the front end.  Spin the front tires and make a wide mark in the center of the tires with a piece of sidewalk chalk.  Drive a 16d nail through the center of a piece of 2X4 about a foot long.  Spin each tire again, this time with the 2X4 resting on the ground under the tire with the nail poking up at it . . . lift the end of the 2x4 until the nail just drags on the tire and makes a thin line in chalk mark all the way around the tire.  With both tires marked, set the front end back on the ground (make sure you've got the 2x4 with the nail in it from under the tire first!).

Turn the wheel from stop to stop and count the turns.  Turn half that many turns back off of one stop.  Measure the distance between the lines on the tires at the back as high up as you can.  Go that same distance up on the front of the tires and measuer the distance.  Adjust the tie rods so that the the tires are towed in VERY VERY SLIGHTLY (1/32" or so).  Lock the tie rod adjusters down.  If you're steering wheel isn't straight when you drive straight down the road, you can pop off the horn button, take the 27mm nut off the wheel, pull it off and turn it.  Be sure you put the nut back on and tighten it down.

That should get you close enough to drive it to an alignment shop.  I've intended to drive Homer to Doyles on Cross Street in Ft. Oglethorpe for a couple of years since I replace the tie rods and ball joints . . . but I haven't . . . it's only ate up one tire . . .

So there you have it . . .  the "official triangle front end alignment guide."  Not responsible for accidents or damage caused by someone actually following it.

Toy van?  What year?  If you plan on "throwing away" that useless FI system, I've got a dumpster in my garage that I can throw that junk away in for you. :D

gobusgo,  I plan to retight the head bolts and load some block seal into my 85  toyvan,  If that don't work it will very likely be destroyed.   Do you have a toyvan too?    SC
