My Tech Tip of the Week . . .

« Reply #15 on: January 17, 2004, 07:30:37 PM »
All that "extra" tin, flaps, pulleys, etc. that people leave off when doing a rebuild...  It's there for a reason.  Unless you can prove all those German engineers were wrong to add it, put it back on.

For example, the thermostat flaps on a type IV engine not only open up when the engine gets hot, they also force air through the oil cooler.  If they're not on, the air just passes over.  Wonder if that's why my engine always ran hot?

That rust-converting coating that you get at Pep Boys by Permatex does it's job well (at least the brush-on type) BUT if you use it on things that get hot, it gets sticky and can stick, for instance, heater box flaps open or closed.  Don't ask how I know.  ???

After stripping several rocker arm studs on my type IV heads, I started to question the "18 foot-lbs" spec in "How to Rebuild your Volkswagen Air-cooled Engine" by Tom Wilson.

The Bentley book says "10 foot-lbs"

Now to go install the retaining wire I forgot last night.
