My son's bus blew a spark plug out of the head

Ok, I got me a new copy of Hot VWs to start looking for some parts. We are just trying to get an idea of how much this is going to cost before we go forward. Hope I don't wear you guys out with questions.

On that page, which kit would I need to use? My son's motor is the 2000cc. Does this seem like a good starting place?

Not a bad price, but all that stuff is for Type-1 based engines not Type-4 .

Try this  .   Type in  VW Type-4 engine parts  on Google.  Looks like a lot of stuff here.

I am not having any luck finding a full rebuild kit for my son's bus. Raby enterprises had a kit but dont know if they will offer it again this year. I have looked and looked and found nothing. Anyone know any companies that would have a Type 4 Kit?

Nope!!  I think we have talked about this before.  You will have to buy "Stuff" a piece at a time. I think its about time for a Type- 1 conversion.

I think that is the direction we are going to have to go.

Now where do I start with this.

What motor type should I start with? Is there a conversion kit I will need to get it to mate with the transmission? What about all the shrouding?

You need to talk to Justin(Zen's son) He did a great job on his conversion . He found some place that had the correct tin to use between the engine and the body and all of the other tricks. It looks very pro.

Sounds like a neat kit for the money.  You can do it cheaper if you are good at fabricating (i.e. - hacking and rigging) but it souds like the kit lets you do the conversion but leave everything intact in case you ever want to go back to Type 4.

Creative Car Craft (Originally in FL, but now in Manchester, TN) makes a fiberglass filler panel:  http://www.creativecarcraft.com/notforbug.htm  That's what Justin used on his.  A previous owner did mine and he cut all the sheet metal out of the engine bay between the frame and rivited in a piece of flat shett metal, then rivited some heavy rubber around the cutout for the type one engine to create a seal.  The fiberglass piece is a better way to go . . . looks better, seals better and like I said, it makes it possible to easily go back to type 4 if you wanted to.

The engine will bolt right up to the type 4 transaxle, but the input shaft of the tranny may be too long . . . you can measure it and cut the end off, or replace it with one from a 68-71 bus.  I hear it's not hard to do, but I cut mine off.  I'm not too familiar with type 4 stuff, but I "think" that somewhere along the line the starter gear on the flywheel changed . . . could be wrong there, but if it did change, you'll have to use an earlier  starter (or one off a bug).

Oh, and by the way, I've been running mine for several years WITHOUT the rear engine support bar and haven't had a problem.  The guy that did my conversion fabricated an "anti-torque" bar for the rear.  I bottomed out in a pot hole once and busted the block where it bolted to the engine.  Based on my experiance with and without a rear bar, I recommended that Justin go witout one.  He's been on several long trips in his bus and hasn't had a problem either.

I wish I had built a larger bore type 1.  I would go with like a 1776cc or so wih dual carbs.  When or if my engine ever dies I am going to build one of those.  The gearing on my bus tranny is just a little to high.  The bus has barely enough power to do 55-60mph on a flat surface.  Go slightly larger than stock. and the creative car craft kit is great by the way.  200 dollars.  hell with that kit on the samba man. Seems like you can save a hundred dollars  and wire it up yourself.  I did.
