My son's bus blew a spark plug out of the head

« on: November 12, 2009, 11:08:13 AM »
We think that the spark plug was loose and blew out of the head. He put another plug in and made it from down town to OLPH and it did it again. Now there are no threads left on the head for that plug. I have another head from a same year bus that I could put on. Is there a better way to fix this? Thanks in advance.

Which side head?  I would pull the head to fix it, cuz on a t-4 engine, the plugs are darned hard to get to.  Trying to thread that thing blind would just about guarantee a major FUBAR.  I'd probably get the head off to repair it.  Metal in the combustion chamber is never a desired outcome. (can be done with leaving the engine in the bus, albeit more of a pain in the arse if it's the driver's side head because of the oil cooler.)

Have fun.  I think i'll go hug my type 1 engine right now.

P.S.  whether you use your old head and fix it, or the used one, pay REAL CLOSE attention to the valves, guides, seats.  I'm just sayin.  you don't wanna be right back in there.

It is the passenger side that blew. I am going to pull the head and Travis said he would help me with work on it. Anything I need to do special to take it off or put it back on?

First thing to do is get all of the small children out of hearing range, Buy a 1/2 gallon of "Ole Barley Corn" and a buy a wrench and fly at it. Like Rick said I'm going to the garage and hug my Type-1

If you pull it down with the engine in there, you should get new pushrod tube seals,a valve cover gasket, intake/ exhaust gaskets.  the exhaust is the most fun to wrestle on and off.   just try not to disturb the piston cylinder sleeves.  leave them stuck to the block if you can. and stuff rags in everything while it's apart.  Just remember to take them out when you put everything back together.

And don't laugh.  i've seen it happen.  and no, it was not me.

At least push rod tubes "O"rings,  Gasket for the cyl. head at the intake pipes and shims that go between the head and the cyl. and exhaust port copper rings. Are you going to just take the one head off ?

I am just going to do the one side. So I guess I need to go by Mainly Foreign and tell them to give me about every gasket they have for this motor? Boy, this sounds like it is going to be fun.

Like Rick said a few post back, Check the heads very closely . Those Type-4 engines have a nasty habit of valve seats coming out of the heads. This sometimes is hard to detect and you will never know when its going to happen

That's exactly why Homer is powered by a Type 1 today.  When I bought him the first time he had a blown engine.  #1 had dropped a vavle seat and there wasn't much left of the #1 piston.  All the metal was still there . . . it was just in powder form and evenly distruted throughout all the bearings and oil gallies.

A blown up type 4 engine is a good first step to a type 1 conversion job.  IMO....

Does anyone know what I need to torque the head bolts to when I put this thing back together? And does anyone have a diagram of the rocker arm assembly? I need to figure out where to put that wire thing under there rocker arms.

They should torque to 25pds.   The square block between the rocker arms has a slot in them . The slot goes down. The wire clip short portion  snaps into that slot and the long portion lays down to help hold the push rod tube in. You may have to pull the long portion out a little with some long nose pliers to snap onto the tube.  Install the head with the proper shim between cyl. head and cyl. You can install the tubes after the heads are on .DO NOT use a sealer on the "O" rings for the push rod tubes.  Just put some oil on them to make it easy to slide the tubes in. You may have to twist the tubes to make them go in. Be careful there. I hope I haven't confused you to much
