My Golf is broken down

« on: April 17, 2006, 08:10:22 AM »
Linda just called me and she is broken down on Amnicola Hwy.  She says it turns over, doesn't start, but sounds like a "broken fan".  I am going to pick her up and thought that if anyone had any way to help me get the Golf to either VW dealership or to my house (i.e., flatbed, tow dolly, etc.) before I have to call a tow truck, please give me a call at 718-0266.  It is now 8:10am.
Thanks!

Rumor has it that the Golf was seen on a tow dolly behind a Ford truck.  Hope it isn't as bad as when Homer was in that situation!

The rumors have turned out to be true.  The owner of the maroon Ford truck towed the Golf to Art Automotive in Ooltewah, not too far from the owner's house.
Thanks to the owner of the American made vehicle.

When I got to where the Golf was sitting off of Amnicola Hwy. I removed the distributor cap and tried to turn the rotor to see if it was seated.  It turned freely.  I then pried back the timing belt cover and saw that the belt was off of the pulley.  I just hope that nothing else has gone wrong (broken valves!).  I am supposed to hear something from the shop today.

Hopefully your engine has a "non-intrusive" valve train.  I broke 2 timing belts on my 81 Chevette.  Both times I was at cruising speed and a valve never touched a piston.  I have, however, seen what a valve head can do to the top of a piston if they collide at 4500 RPMs . . . let's just say, it ain't pretty!     Hopefully you just need a new belt . . . I'll keep my figers crossed for you.  [-o<

Travis ,If VW didn't do something else stupid in the last few years and you have a 8 valve engine, you more than likely will be ok as far as bending up valves.  You really need to look at the belt tensioner and make sure the bearings are OK and is not locked up. How many miles are on the car ?

I think there are 112,000 miles on the Golf.  Linda said there was no "clank, clunk, or bang" when it suddenly lost power.  She was in the fast lane and maybe 10 seconds went by before she was able to pull off the road and turn off the engine.

The funny thing is that just last week I got a friendly little reminder from Al Johnson VW for the Golf's scheduled maintenance checkup, which I think includes the timing belt check and/or change.

Well, Unless VW changed things here lately, they recommended timing belt changes every 60,000 miles on 8-valve engines and every 40,000 miles on 16- valve engines. I haven't kept up with the water-cooled stuff so that all may have changed. Good luck on yours.
