My Cold Night

« on: December 02, 2010, 12:55:56 AM »
Ok guys the new bug " was " running great as of this morning and going to work at 12:30pm and started great when i left work. Here is the But. But then about 3 blocks from work it seemed to loose some power and would not accelerate at all. I had it in 3rd gear and all i could go is 25mph max with the peddle to the floor. As i drove along it got worse till i was only in first gear and all i could do is 15mph to get out of traffic and stop.

The headlights did not dim and the engine was getting fuel. Finally i lost all power and the car stalled out like there was no battery in the car but again the headlights where fine and the hazzards blinked great for 2 hours while i woke up the wife and got the tow bar I borrowed from Bobby (thanks ) and got it home. So 2 hours on cold concrete and i now need the knowledge of everyone out there. .......... Rob ..........

did it still crank? If so, I'd say you have a problem with the ignition system. Check for 12v at the hot side of the coil when the key is on. Then check that the points are opening and closing. While it's apart, check the rotor and cap.

other options could be valves or timing. It's usually the basics

Umm.... maybe not good... have you tried to turn the engine over by hand?

Sounds silly maybe, but when a lot of these engines lock up, they experience a lack of power, and just gradually lose momentum untill they will no longer turn.  No big bang, just a slow down.  was there any spitting/ sputtering going on, indicating a engine miss, or just the power loss?   ???

Lets hope that didn't happen BUT it happened to me a long time ago in a right new '67 engine . The thing had sat for about a month and one cold morning I took off in it and got a mile from the house and it slowed down and finally just stopped. Turned out the dang thing locked up on the # 3 main brg.
  Keep your fingers crossed.

I went out about 10 minutes ago to check what you have advised me on the possible problems. First of all Rick at R&M just did new points, condenser, rotor and cap and set the timing and cleaned the plugs for me. I can move it by hand so i decided to turn the key and see what happens. IT STARTED UP PERFECTLY ! So i guess it is not locked up. It will not just sit there and idle though. Even when warm i still need to keep the pedal pushed down some to keep it running. So that is where i am sitting. What do we think it is now ? Maybe the voltage regulator or the brushes in the generator. I am grasping at straws right now. Oh one last thing i noticed is that my headlights are great on highbeams but orangish when on regular beams.

Rob , When you post a problem you need to have a little more info on what happened. You didn't say if you tried to re-start the engine or if any warning light came on while driving or did have any missing or spluttering as Rick stated.  We wouldn't have to spend time wondering if you locked up or not.  Now that we know that Rick(R&M) just installed new stuff I would give Him a call and see if he would look things over that he did . Maybe the points moved or the timing moved or the carb took a dump on you. These little things happen to the best of us in time. He is a super Guy and I believe he would help you out. If you do that and he finds the problem, let us all know. It might help someone out later.

FYI, Just tell Rick what happened and when.  Then shut up and let him work. When I had my shop Folks would bug me to death with what they thought I should do and ending confusing me and himself . I use to have a sign in my shop that listed my labor rates:

   1- $50.00 per hour
2- If you watch $60.00 per hour
3- If you tried to hum "Rap Tunes" out loud while watching $ 70.00 per hour
4- If you tried to help $100.00 per hour
5- If you DID help, No extra cost other than the price of a 9mm cartridge.

this is a little bit different version of the sign then the ones i have seen but i like it

I love it when i am working on someones car and they want the car back sonner and they ask if they can help,  i think to myself,  why are you having me do this in the first place, it is because you can't.

I hear you all on what should happen when i take it to R&M. I did not touch anything when i had to take it to rick and i have not touched anything when i picked it up from there a week ago. So who knows what it is. Everyone here has these temper tantrums from the vws so i roll with it. But there will come a time when rolling will not be that fun to me any more.. :o

Pop off the valve covers and see if you've got a rocker on one side coming loose.  It doesn't exactly fit all the symtoms you descibed, but I've seen it happen more than once.  It will cause a sudden loss of power to the point that you can only do 20 - 25 in 3rd gear with your foot to the floor . . . until you hit a hill which may kill it.  It will run, but it won't run "good" and you will have to keep your foot on the gas to keep it running.   :)

When i bought my bus the PO had just got it back from a shop and coming back from a trip to the mall it started running like yours. He was young and thought the motor was gone. So i got it cheap. I thought the motor was gone but then i thought if it really was he wouldn't be able to drive it all the way home. At home i started to check things out someone didn't tighten up the clamp on the vaccum hose to the power brake--did that and it ran great. The more i go through it rebuilding carb, timing, valves, and so on the better it runs.It all comes down to fire and gas. You can disconnect everything from the carb and then plug up all the vaccum ports and see how it runs.THEN see if its getting gas buy taking off the line and seeing how much come out into a jar when you turn it over. Coils and condensor can do that to maybe the screw on the points is a little loose.Just be glad its not a new 30,000 car and you'd have to shoot it! STEVE
