Not really sure if this is a tech question or not but i have never really been able to find what the mpg on my 69 beetle should be or about how far i should be able to go on a tank of gas. If any one has an idea where i can find it i would like to find out.....

I always averaged low-mid 20s around town, mid - upper 20s on the highway when driving 55-60, a good bit less when averaging 70ish.

Thanks, thats about what i was thinking. I maxed out the tank the other day with gas and it went 202 miles before i filled it back up. It took 8.4 gallons to fill it back up. So i figure i had about another 20 miles left in the tank. as my gas gauge stops at 3/4 of a tank when filling i have to wait a bit before the needle stops droping. Is around 250 miles a tank sound right for a beetle ?

I have always looked at MPG like this...If you enjoy driving the car, then it doesn't matter.  If it matters, then you don't need the car.   :)

When I floor it and drive 80 ish on the interstate I get 21 ish with a 30/31 carbie and Starting out in 2 all the time, ( I love my Autostick...)

Hey JR i am with you on that. I enjoy driving my 40 year old beetle more than my Mitsubishi Eclipse so the mpg really does not matter but i was just trying to figure out how far i can go before i have to refill the tank. Getting 24mpg is good. Better than the eclipse and i have abetter chance of not getting a speeding ticket in the beetle vs the eclipse. ............   By the way KC i also have the 30/31 carb on mine and it is running great now...

My first bug had a non-working fuel gauge.  I literally drove it around (on a full tank of fuel to begin with) until it ran out of fuel.  I logged the mileage and subtracted 30 from the total number of miles that I ran on that one tank.  Then when I hit the desired mileage, I would stop and get fuel.

A friend of mine argued this point with a co-worker to the tune of taking a photo with his camera phone driving down the interstate, 85mph+.  Still they didn't believe him, right up until he brought in the speeding ticket to prove it.

A Beetle shouldn't have any problem doing 80.  Homer the Super Bus is loaded down with junk and is powered by a stock 1600.  He'll do over 80 if you have a enough straight road with no uphills (a good tail wind helps too).  Of course after pushing a bus that fast for a couple of hours, don't be suprised when rod caps start breaking loose and flying through the block.  Don't ask me how I know about this . . .

Slow down and drive it right and you should average about 25 MPG overall.  They are capable of getting a lot better.  VW conducted a test back in the late 60s/early 70s and got 84 mpg in a Beetle . . .

Mine gets zero mpg when parked but I'm working on it to get the numbers up a bit. Fuel guages are overated they didnt even come in a bug till 62 get a good measurin stick and put it down in the gas tank...stick is wet your good ta go,stick is dry you get to walk.Works the same with chicks cept if the stick is dry she can walk
Maybe they shoulda kept the fuel reserve switch afterall? If I kept track of fuel i'd go nuts. Just put gas in and drive. Carry a can and get good walking shoes that sometimes helps.

Gas Gauge? Whats that?  I've just got this little lever that you kick over when the engine starts dyeing

I loved the res.fuel tap . Brian, If you set the little lever on the fuel tap half way between full tank and reserve settings and somebody steals the car, they will get just about a mile before it runs out of gas.
