Mirror Installation Help Please

« on: February 02, 2011, 06:06:15 PM »
Hey now, looking forward to BugAPalusa
Dave from Nashville here, wanting to install a passenger side view mirror in my 74 standard beetle.  I have a mirror from empi but realize I need the insert it screws into since the car didn't come with one.  Anyone know where I might get such an item,  Thanks  Dave

Beetle convertibles had passenger side rear view mirrors, you could find a door from one and use that as a donor to weld in.

Just to understand.... you mean that you have no mounting hole there, correct?

Yeah it never had a passenger side view so no hole and nothing to thread it into, I think they are roughly 16 mm fine threads but not perfectly sure

Otay, then...

Yeah, like i said, you could get a donor chunk from a convertible door, but i doubt you could buy just the section from anybody, prob. the whole door, and, if you shipped it, that would get pretty pricey.  Or.... you could just make a plate using a large nut welded to flat steel, mount that into the door.  You would have to cut a "window" on the outside, make the inner structure, then weld the outer layer back I suppose.

Another alternative would be to just buy a donor driver's side door, cut out the innre section, and adapt it to the passenger door.
