Mien Wipers Quit... Bad day.

« on: December 17, 2008, 10:19:44 PM »
Ok, 5 miles from home mien wipers started jumping around like when the windshield was dry, you know kinda jummpy.  Well by mile 4 they were barely moving, turned them off, pulled into a station, lifted the arms and turned them on and they will not move but just a little bit...
Seems to be binding.  I had been hearing this humming noise and was unable to locate the sound over the past few days.  Know I know what it was...
So, I am thinking that the motor has died or is terminal.  Is this a pain in the butt to change?
I am not leaning toward the linkages at this time because they have been working just great this past 10 months or so.

Any suggestions, driving that last 4 miles was a PAIN, almost litterally.
Thanks,
KC :D

I did not find it to be to hard to chainge out my wiper motor etc when mine were bad. And you know how good i am finding and repairing the roblems with my beetle........ . Just make sure you have a couple or 3 hours to make sure to get all the wires etc back how it should be if you replace more than just the motor.............Rob

I have seen more wiper shafts lock up than motors burn out.  Take your wiper  arms off and clamp some vice grips on the shafts ,  turn on the wipers and help them to move. You can tell which one is sticking by the shuttering feeling. I have free'd  up a lot shafts by spraying "PB Blaster" on the shafts while "pecking" on the end of the shaft with a small hammer.(easy here)  If they free up oil them down and let them run for awhile.
All this is worth  a try before you yank the  unit out.   I'm going to bet you have a stuck shaft.

If that's the case, you might want to see a doctor.

Things like oiling door hinges and wiper shafts were once part of regular maintenance, just like changing oil and adjusting valves and brakes.  Most folks don't do it anymore.  We've been spoiled by modern convieniances like hydraulic lifters, disc brakes, electronic ignition systems and oil filters.   :?  I'm as guilty as anyone on missing regular maintenace items.  It always comes back to bite me somewhere down the road.

" To be bitten comes as a reminder of what preventive maint. stands for"       ( an old time mechanic saying)  :?
