Gonna take it to Rick on August 8th...Thanks other Rick!....Now I need to locate somewhere or someone who can sell me the front and rear engine tin...Anyone know of someone ?
Rick might have the tin. He will do a good job. He is about last good tech. around here that can work on Air-Cool's. All the rest of us are "sitting down" after a Bunch of years in the trenches. I lasted about 46 years and Grass Hopper(The other Rick)  about 20+ years. We will still offer advice if you want it. Have Fun.

....I have NO engine lid seal....

I know from experiance that if you forget to latch your engine lid on a type 1 powered 73 bus and run down the road at 55, it's suck all the hot air and exhuast coming from under the rear bumper right back up into the engine compartment . . . and unless it's really cold outside, it will run hot.  I don't know for a fact, but I'd bet that no seal would be about as bad.

This is true. Now you know why VW went to all the trouble to installed all these seals to keep the top of the engine separated from the bottom half of the engine and the cooling intakes were up high on the sides of the body.I use to see people riding down the free-way with the deck lid opened all the way thinking that they were cooling the engine down at speed. ::)
