Lower the front end on a supersonic beetle

« on: March 21, 2009, 07:42:23 AM »
After  working on that ball joint this week,  I notice that Stupie is riding high in the front and swinging low in the back.  Is there a name for when you wear saggy blue jeans and you have to hold them up in the front and they hang half mast on your butt?  That is what Stupie has.

Them pesky front  coil springs must be taking viagra.  Since I already have this Mr Universe body ( See Ball Joint post picture)  and have no need for my bar bell weights,  I could store them in the trunk and that would level out the car.  The problem with that is  it was hard to steer and it hurt my back having to take all the weights out to get to the spare.

Any  good ideas .   (Cheap n Easy}   to level out Stupie?

Grease up the spare tire well and the spare tire and wheel with a mold release agent (PAM cooking spray should work fine) and then lay the spare tire in place.  Squirt expandable foam in the space under the wheel.  After if hardens, pull out the spare and remove the block of foam . . . use the same process to make a mold of the block of foam.  Fill the mold with concrete.  When you're done, the block of concrete should fit perfectly into the space under your spare.

Or, you could reposition your spring plates to raise the rear when it needs to be.  Or you could buy a set of adjustable coil-over shocks to raise the rear.  Or you could buy some adjustable struts for the front (Top Liine Parts has 'em) and fix it right.  Or you could throw your weights on top of the spare and keep a couple of cans of fix-a-flat with you.  Just some ideas to get you started . . . I'm sure you'll come up with something creative that will work!

Hell !!!    Drive fast over some speed humps and maybe the struts will break loose and Stupie will fall back down to a normal height.

Get the torch out and heat the springs!!! LOL,  just kidding, lowering spring would be a better idea, or you could cut a coil out but the correct way is new springs and struts.

Good ideas Zen,     Bugtech's idea.  not so good.  Travis,  I would like to shorten the spring,  but that seem like work and Bugakabluwoee  is next  month and Stupie is real excited

I am thinking of using plumbers tape.  I'll get  my kids to sit on the fender and then wrap the metal tape through the coils and bolt it.  Then when they get off the fender,  the tape will hold the springs in compressed mode.   THey also have some squisher clamp thing at auto zone for 15 bucks.   I just dont want to spend it.

One of my beloved kids threw a  roller blade on my acura windshield today.   It looks like a base ball hit it on the driver side.  I'm so pissed off.  Add your favoroite expletive "HERE".
Good thing I fixed Stupie.   Did I mention its my Birthday?,    Hugs and kisses   SC

My first beetle was a 72 standard and i lowered the rear but did not have the money for droped spindles so i place a bag of cement in the spare tire area and it lowered it some with no mods.  The only problem was that over time moisture hardened it and it was a pain to remove.

Once again, Sir Smelly Cat, you throw out the terms "good way" and "cheap" in the same sentence.......

I don't know of a good and cheap way to do it.

Cheap... a bag of cement.

Good... lowering springs.....

I'm just waiting to see what you can dream up in between.

I still say that the struts are locked up .  Its kind of strange that the struts gained height only after you jacked it up.  I have never seen a Super sit that high by looking at your pic.    Does the car have any bounce at all ?

Yep, that would make the most sense . . . but asking SC to sell Stupie would be like asking me to sell Homer the Super Bus.   :D   Think about it.  Who in their right mind would buy it?  :?:

Stupie's front springs are full of bounce.  Great spring action.  The front strut are some after market air shocks.  there is bicycle stems on the fenders,  Stupie struts  just look pretty and hold the wheel on I guess.  That picture even has 3 tool boxes in the truck.  My nose would go up another inch if I take them out.   I'm having trouble seeing over the hood.
