Hi, guys.  The German Supply AFM showed up today and it was an easy drop-in replacement.  It started right up.  Do i need to make any timing adjustments or anything like that with a new AFM?  I haven't had time to drive it yet, only start it up and run around the block.  Seems okay, but I am about to take a road trip...

Thoughts?

You should get some one with a sniffer to check the exhaust. there is an adjustment for the mixture.
But if it runs, go with it.

Thanks guys.  She's running great again.  To bring the story to a close, I would just like to add that I got my refund today and, yep, after essentially being called an idiot and a liar and fooling around for a week proving that their part was defective/incorrect, ordering from someone else, and returning the AFM to Bus Depot, they refunded everything but the $16 shipping.  So, essentially, I just paid $16 (plus labor) to get treated like crap.  I know that isn't much, but it seems like I was kind and reasonable and gave them every opportunity to repair the rift but they screwed up to the bitter end.  It's a shame, too.  They have great stuff.  Funny how a $150 part costs $230 with the core charge and shipping and that I had to spend another $230 buying it from someone else before BD issued the refund.  So the cash outlay was $460 for a $150 part.  That's life...  But it's the principle... $16?  Really?  They should be sending me gift certificates after that train wreck.

So, I went on my trip to Charlotte and had an issue that almost left me stranded.  Everything started out fine but at my first exit, I noticed that the idle was low and I had to gas it to keep running at a stop.  That worked so I soldiered on.  After that everything seemed fine.  After having parked for a couple of hours and getting back on the road it died out completely at a stop.  Then it wouldn't start for a few minutes.  Like it was flooded or something.  After a few attempts I was able to get back to the campground.  The next morning I adjusted the idle slightly but it did the same thing, dying out at stops.  I guess I didn't adjust it enough.  So I adjusted it higher and never had the problem again and made it back fine.  My guess is that it is probably a Temp Sensor II problem.  I think this because it would idle fine during warm-up but then after highway driving the idle dropped.  Now I have it set higher at start-up and it seems fine after warming all the way up.  I have listened for a vacuum leak and not found any (doesn't mean there might not be one hiding somewhere).

Anyone want to chime in before I pick up a temp sensor?

Also, I can find the sensor on EBay for $20 or genuine for $45 elsewhere.  Thoughts?

On the later VWs the temp sensors seem to be worth buying oem,  the aftermarkets don't last as long

Not sure why you'd have to pay $45 to get a genuine TSII. They are $16.66 from Bus Depot.

Of course if you'd prefer to send your money elsewhere after all that mess with the AFM, I understand that too. It's 18.95 on CIP.

Try this trick before you buy a new sensor.  We would take the sensor out and find a lot of chalky white oxidation on the sensor around the threads . We just clean the stuff off on a wire wheel reinstall .Corrected the problem. We would save about 50% of those things. Its worth a try and let me know what you found. You might get lucky ;D  PS DO NOT USE ANY ANTI-SEIZE CRAP on the threads. That stuff is a wonderful insulator .

You, sir, are a genius!  Too late for the new sensor as I already ordered and received it.  As I opened the box and was looking at the new sensor this morning I thought I'd better ask you guys first if I should use anti-seize!  Thanks for the heads up.

So I just thought I would write the final chapter to this episode.  I swapped out the temp sensor and adjusted the idle once sweetpea was warmed up.  Now she is running great.  So far the problem of loss of power has not resurfaced now that I have a different AFM.  Also the stalling out at intersections after highway travel has not happened again.  The temp sensor that I replaced had completely lost all insulation on the wire and the sensor end looked pretty crudded up.   The added benefit of the AFM and temp sensor is much better gas mileage as a result of a much more efficient mixture.  Score.  Thanks to everyone who chimed in on this one.
