You are capping off that vacuum port, right?
I bet the '78's would work on sweetpea, but your along ways off to drive down just to see.

I've tried everything short of popping it open.  Just cranks w/o turn-over.  I think you are spot on about the lack of fuel.  That is what it sounds/feels like.  I wonder if that black thing on the flap in the bottom right photo of my AFM is the switch for the fuel pump or a related back-stop.  The BD AFM doesn't have it.

With the key on, you should hear the fuel pump kick on when you deflect the arm in the AFM.

I'd give them hell and then post your experience under the Buyer's and Seller's Feedback on thesamba.com. BD seems to monitor that and respond to keep their name clear. ( http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=186591&highlight=depot )

I would try to resolved it today and then if they give any more flak and you are done, post up a clear and clean, emotions aside, response so that everyone else can be aware. You might even mention it during your phone call that you WANT to give them good feedback on thesamba...

Here's my counter:

"I am grateful for your desire to get this worked out, but I just got your message and I thought I should send you a picture of the two parts side by side that will highlight the obvious physical differences.  Take a look.  I have also talked to a number of experts who say that in addition to the pot and and the temp sensor, there is an internal fuel pump safety contact in the AFM that will keep the bus from starting if the flap is misaligned.  I have spent hours verifying that it is not an issue with my bus.  My OG part works fine.  Your replacement is DOA.  Whatever the case, I did not get the part that I ordered form you and I am not going to get into what is potentially weeks of back and forth with the re-builder where I am off the road more than I have already been.  Especially when the re-builder told me to send it back to you!  There are several other part stores that have rebuilt 410020s in stock that I can get in days.  Ones that they will stand by.  So, take a look at the side by sides and then do what it takes to send me a return label and refund me my $225.95 so I can order the right part from someone who will get it right and stand by their stuff.  I know that I have spent over 2K at Bus Depot over the last few years so this experience has been unfortunate and unbelievable.  At least you can still make it right before you spend $225.95 for the worst and most widespread kind of advertizing possible in addition to loosing a once loyal customer with $$$ to spend."

Haven't heard back yet.

so the switch on the rebuilt one isnt just moved to the vacuum port instead of the flap area? have you tried putting a hose on that port and having someone provide human vacuum (I didnt want to say suck on it) while you try to crank it to see if that makes the pump kick on?

He could just turn the key on and then pull a vacuum on it and should be able to hear the pump kick on.
I noticed the one that was for the 944 in the video that he posted didn't have an arm or switch in the black cover either, you are probably right about needing the vacuum.

Update:

Bus Depot wrote back and admitted that the AFM in the picture was not the right one and apologized.  It only took several days to prove it.  In the end, they would not take my word but the picture sealed the deal.  They sent me a return label and I just bought another one from German Supply.  The guy there said that there must be a shortage of cores because he used to be able to order 5+ rebuilt ones at a time and now he can only order 1.  Good thing he already had one in stock.

Thanks guys for all of your help.  I'll keep you posted.

Good they finally decided to refund you. Just a damn shame they wouldn't take your word for it from the beginning.

I've dealt with Scott at German Supply a number of times and his products are good. Plus he stands behind them and he's always been good to deal with.

Stick to YOUR guns and for god sake don't skin it up or start twisting on things much less popping the top off to look at something. Good Luck !!

hey, don't you know that ladies don't like people talking about their age?  I think Sweetpea is taking that "old bus" comment the wrong way...
