Loose Steering Column

« on: September 04, 2013, 08:02:00 PM »
I have a 1966 VW Dune Buggy that has a steel rod for the steering column that is not stable. Do they make a bracket to stabilize it or what should I do about it. It drives good but the steering column is loose.

Sounds like it missing the bearing or it is worn,  maybe more pictures or info would help,
Does it have a steering column from a beetle or just a rod?

I'm with Travis . . . a picture or two would be a BIG help on this one.  I've seen some really "creative" stuff people have done putting buggies together.  If it's a just a rod, you could probably get a couple of pillow block bearings that fit the rod and bolt them in place . . . but, for safety reasons, I would consider changing it over to a newer style Beelte steering column with the colapsable "cage" on it.

Empi used to offer a bearing that was installed into a carrier bracket that could be bolted up under a rail/under a dash of a fiberglass dunebuggy.  The center rod of the column passed through it, no outer tube needed.
