long block or rebuild

« on: June 29, 2009, 11:02:50 PM »
im getting tired of looking at my van, and not driving it.  i need to make the decision on rebuild or just buy a rebuilt long block.  its currently a 1641 type 1 engine.  last oil change i found ring in the engine plus a good bit of metal flake which could be from the new piston, and ring that replaced the burnt one... ring pieces must of came from the burnt piston. did not see them while replacing.  so i can get the engine rebuilt and hope most the parts are reusable+ engine and head machining.  or i can say screw that engine and throw it on the shelf to tinker with later and just get a new long block.  im not sure what i should do at this point maybe one of you guys can help me out. i am scared of buying someone else's troubles. im getting tired of living in a tent on the river when i got a van haha.

Yep, it's much nicer living in "VAN, DOWN BY THE RIVER!"

I'd tear it apart and see exactly what the damage is . . . all that will cost ya' is a little time.  If it hasn't pumped metal all through it and scared up the the crank and cam, and if the case is good, I'd make sure the oil passages were as clean as possible, and throw some new bearings and a set of STOCK pistons/cylinders at it (I'm not a fan of oversize "slip in" cylinders, especially if you are running the engine in a bus).  If the heads look good, I'd see if I could get Ret.Bugtech to clean 'em up and replace the exhaust valves.  He did a set of single port heads for me a couple of years ago . . . the went to him looking like the 40 year old heads that they were and came back looking like new ones, and better yet, performing like new ones and it was a good bit less expensive than buying new heads.

If your case, crank, cam and lifters are reusable and your heads are rebuildable, you could end up with a "good as new" engine for not a whole lot of money.  If you find the internals and/or the case is trashed, all you've wasted is a little time that you could have spent looking for another engine.

I'll second what Zen is saying.  I'd tear it down, find out exactly what the damage is, making sure no bearing damage has occurred, stuff like that.  Go from there.
