LOLA's first Tenn. camp test

« on: June 22, 2008, 10:22:51 AM »
Today is Sunday, and I'm getting packed to take LOLA on her first camping trip in Tennessee. I'll be cooking for 150 highschool kids at a mission camp. Deb and I will be staying in LOLA (78 Westy) for two weeks. I Want to have a tune-up cookout when I get back. If anyone likes to eat great BBQ and tinker, I'll make it happen. See ya in two weeks.

good luck on your trip, and be sure and let me know when you get back... I'm going to be starting to disassemble my motor to take it out in the mean time. Have fun!

I'm now back from my two weeks working at camp. Things were great camping in LOLA. The new roof top air worked like a charm. I'm looking foward to a tuneup/cookout for LOLA. I can cook alot better than I can wrench! See everybody Friday night at the Sconic cruise-in.
Peace, love and all that

I figured we could start a shopping list of stuff we'll know we'll need. Off the top of my head:
fuel line
hose clamps
fuel filter
oil filter
points/condensor (or go electronic)?
spark plugs/wires
fan belt

What else?

Russ, I don't have a clue what I need. I'm relying on your call on that. Also, where do we get this stuff. Lola is sick again. Running like she did at the cruise-in, but the vacumn line I replaced is good. She ran great comming back from Decater, but sat. I didn't think I was going to get her back from the Choo-Choo.

You better start looking before you start spending. That thing has more potential vac.leaks than the US Congress and the CIA and it just takes one to ruin your whole day. I have seen those things "cough" once and blow every Vacumn line on the engine off clamp or no clamp even from the brake booster up front.

We found another vacuum leak thanks to the rubber tee that was cracked. It connects on the intake plenum and goes to the brake booster and decel valve. There was a pretty big crack in the top and with Fred's help it's patched up with some electrical tape.

Most every place online wants about $35 for that little thing, anyone have one available? Part number is 022 133 083 D. I also put in an email to Busted Bus to see if he had any. We also ordered new spark plugs, plug wires, oil filter, fuel hose and clamps, and an electronic ignition module for the tune-up.

Also we found a heavy red wire in the engine compartment crimped to a blue wire that's just loose. I followed it back to the starter and I have no idea what it's for. It definitely doesn't need to be laying around though.

Mike, I have found, in my box of parts at home, a good used tee connector. There is a small crack on one side but it's not all the way through. I have cleaned it up and I'll bring it with me to the cook-out. Actually to the cruise-in too.

Here's a NOS one on the Samba for $20: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=548148

What's the inside diameter of the vacuum hose?  A "Y" might be hard to find, but wouldn't a generic "T" do the job?
