Anyone know a good machine shop that line bores aircooled VW engines. Also need the heads worked over and a "dry fit" of the short block for clearances etc.... I live in Knoxville but I have a non-VW that will make the trek to Chattanooga if necessary.... I would prefer a Knoxville based shop.

Any help or advise  would be greatly appreciated.....

I can linebore your case and do your heads.  I'm not clear on what you mean "dry fit" for clearances.  Im a retired factory trained VW tech after 45 + years on aircools. I work at my home.
I,m in Chatt.    If you can't find someone closer to you I'll will be glad help you out.  You can P.M. me or call    423-894-3374

Thanks....I may take you up on that....   What I mean by "dry fit" is-  to fit the cam and crank and bearings and lifters, etc...  To make sure they all fit properly....

Once again thanks....... Anyone know a good shop a little closer to K-ville....
I don't mind to drive there but with the way fuel prices are...

Not to threadjack, but what does a line bore typically run?

I've never had one done.... I've always bought the cases "ready to assemble".   I'm sure it's cheaper than a new or reman case..... Judging buy having head work done, it shouldn't be too bad.....

Just got these out of the hot tank.....  One more dip.....Then, off to the shop for a little machining.... I wish I had the equipment to do it myself....

Cost can vary. Somewhere between $ 50 to $65 depending what has to be done.  With the price of new cases being just about "Out'a Sight" I belive a person needs to look at trying to save their orignal case if at all possible or go for a GOOD reman. case. You would be surprised how many cases get tossed when they could have been saved.
If you are going to build a big "Bad Ass" engine ,I think I would go with a new case thats been prep for it.  Its just money.
I have had "0" problems with boring as long as the case is not warped though the main bearing journals or cracked somewhere.  This you can check before doing anything.
