I just got back from an 1,100 mile round trip to Florida and back.  Oscar took Moose and I down there with only a few starter problems to complain about.  No problems until...

Today I was on my way to get Talia from school when the red oil light started flickering, then went solid.  I pulled off the road when I could (about 50 feet past when the light stayed on) and looked under the engine.  Oil was pouring out.  I would say that it was mostly coming from the front of the engine (front is front), between the engine and transmission.
 
My question is this:  When the main seal goes out, will your engine take a dump like Oscar's did?  I mean there was a HUGE puddle of oil under there.

I got Oscar towed home with Sweetpea.  Thank goodness for the bar up under the front of Oscar that someone welded on there to accept a Beetle tow bar.  And thank goodness that I was less than a mile away from home when it happened.

And thank God that it didn't happen on our way back up from Florida, say, oh, I don't know, anywhere between Tampa and Chattanooga...

Oscar is now in the garage awaiting an engine pull and analysis...and possible rebuild.

Travis,  More than likey you blew a oil galley plug out of the case behind the flywheel. With the amount oil you are saying dumped out that fast, I would almost make book on the galley plug.  Don't panic as this is not as bad as you would think and since you got Oscar shut down pretty fast you more than likely didn't hurt anything. This plug will be to the right side of the block with you facing the flywheel. The flywheel will have to come off so you can see what happen. Clean up the area around the hole really good and be sure there is not a crack in the case that travels straight up. A crack in the Type-4 case at that point is very,very rare,but it pays to check.
     DO NOT use the old plug and DO NOT replace the plug with a new one if you could find one. We use to tap out the galley and install a theaded screw like you would find on a pulley for a elec. motor or a Allen screw. You tap just far enough to get the screw flush with the outside of the block so you can peen it over a little bit  ,but not so far in to block the galley . Its been a long time since I have done this ,but I belive the screw  
has to about  1/2" long and close to 1/2" in dia. but you need to check to be sure about that.  Use Locktite thead locker.  We never had this repair to fail on us. We saved a lot of Type- 4 engines as this was not a un-common thing to happen to those "Pecker-woods". Of course it might be just the flywheel seal, but the seal would have to complely destroy itselve,but I not seen that happen. Keep me posted [-o<

What about the plug at the end of the camshaft? It would be at the case seam under the crank and is around the size of a quarter. It wouldn't pour oil like the galley plug, but it would pour. That engine that went in Bob and came right back out had a pouring leak there just from the plug being poorly seated.

I have seen the cam plug leak , but Oscar been on the road for a while and the cam plugs just don't blow out in a instant. You can dump 4 qts of oil in about a min. or less at speed when the galley plug falls out.

What causes it to blow out? High oil pressure? Oil too thick? High revs on a cold engine with thick oil?

A lot of oil got up in the engine compartment.  I found out why today.  The plug for the timing hole broke a while back and I never replaced it.  I can just see now the oil spurting out that hole, spraying the compartment with lovely spots of oily oil. :puke:

I'm sure that that quantity of oil wouldn't have gotten up there if the plug had been in place.

Travis, At least that oil didn't soak up your clutch disc. If you were lucky with the rest of the oil,you may have saved you disc. You need to get the engine dropped if you haven't already so you can get the disc cleaned off before it really soaks up the oil. Spray carb cleaner does a good job.

Moose came over tonight and we pulled Oscar's engine.  He brought over his motorcycle/ATV jack, and boy, let me tell you what.  If you have ever pulled a Type IV engine with just a 2 or 3 ton floor jack, you would love the ease and convenience of this motorcycle jack.  The place where the engine rests (I'll call it a "bed") is wide enough to keep the engine in a "side-to-side" balance.  A few pieces of 1 X 1 wood resting under the front and rear of the engine keeps it from rocking front and back.  We just made sure that everything was clear and let the engine down slowly, and pulled it right out from underneath, all without the extra fear of the engine unbalancing and falling off of the jack.

I love it!

Now who wants to take bets on what I find when I take the flywheel off? :-k

(David, I think the clutch has been saturated with oil.  I'm not sure if I can save this one.  We'll see.) [-o<

I teeter tottered my engine and had a couple of Oh shee's   before I got it off or back on. Ok, I lied,  it fell off.   I like your motor bike jack idea.  Since My front seal is dripping oil.  I figure it will last forever since it is being so we lubricated.  SC

Ok, all bets are off (Although Ret. Bugtech would have won).
The oil galley plug on the right side of the cam plug is the nasty culprit.  That thing looks like an oversized watch battery, shiny on the outer ring and a dull luster on the inside part.
Now the real fun starts.

Travis, Although its very rare on a Type-4 case, be sure to check the case for a crack from the galley at 12 o'clock and 9 o'clock. Brake or carb spray cleaner will make the crack really show up if you have one. You might as well replace the pressure plate along with the disc as I have had a pressure plate collapse (would not release) when I used it over even when it seemed just fine before. Go figure.

Another thing I learned a long time ago, replace the throw-out bearing also. They are cheap!!!! You don't want to put everything back together and two or three weeks later have that bearing start screaming at you.

Not a bad idea to replace the T.O. brg. In Herbs case he can get rid of one thing that screams at him. I'm not so sure about the other one :lol:

I didn't/don't have any brake or carb cleaner (I used all the brake cleaner when I did my brakes a while back) but I took an old toothbrush dipped in kerosene and cleaned the case at the galley real good.  I don't see any cracks, thank goodness.

Yeah, I was going to go ahead and get the whole enchilada...clutch, pressure plate, and throw-out bearing.  Might as well.

Ecologically speaking, what is the best thing to do with all these metal (or asbestos, or whatever) parts that are being replaced?  Will a scrap yard take just about anything?  I'm trying to be law-abiding in at least one aspect of thinking. :whistle:  8-[

Good ! No cracks. Let the game begin.  If you are still trying to sell one of your "back-lot" beauty's, hide your old parts in the car and let the proud new owner worry about them.  No extra charge. Its amazing how much junk I have gotten rid of.  Might save you a trip to the scrap yard with so little stuff. Sachs and Lux hasn't used asbestoes in clutches in years :twisted:
