lafayette mechanics??

« on: June 22, 2005, 04:32:05 PM »
Howdy,

I just inherited a 1963 VW Westfalia Bus in darn near mint condition.

I drove it home, (lafayette ga area), from Oklahoma City.  Believe it or not, it ran perfect the whole way.  Slow, but perfect.  I parked it in my garage for a couple weeks, started it up and it seems to be missing on a cylinder.  It will barely idle and won't smooth out with more rpms...

I'm looking for all suggestions for fixes or recommendations of mechanics that might be able to help me.  I'd be willing to hire somebody local to come lay hands on her.  I'm guessing it may be worn points or spark plugs...any help out there....Thanks a bunch!!

Welcome Aboard Jim.  How many miles has your "critter" got showing ? Which engine does it have ?   1200 cc 40hp or 1500cc 50 hp. If you think the engine is org. It could have had either one from the factory. Put your engine # up here and we can tell you. # is on the crankcase right below the gen. stand. It makes a difference how you tune.
Congrats. You have scored a "goodie"  Can you post some pics ?

That is a very nice bus. I'm surprised the bug tech (aka Godfather) didn't jump on board about your problem. Start by checking all you plug wires first. With it running as good as you say and for no appearent reason start missing it shouldn't be anything serious.

Careful there Jim!  Sounds like you are near what RetBugtech calls the "LaFayette Triangle."  Weird things happen around here!    You might want to keep it locked up in your garage until you can get a mechanic from up north (say . . . Chattanooga . . .) to give it a once over.   :D

But seriously . . . Like Herb said, check your plug wires.  It may be as simple as a wire came off a plug.  After a trip that long, a good once over of the the ignition system (mainly checking the wires and setting the points and timing) and the valves (check/adjust) can't hurt.  I'd be happy to help out if I can find the time . . . I've been working on getting an engine in my 73 for a couple of months now.  I'm kind'a slow.  Kind'a.  OK, REALLY REALLY slow.  But, I'd be willing to help sometime just to be able to get a good up close and personal look at it.   8)

I was hiding and watching. You can`t be too careful around the "Triangle"
The Guys are right about checking the things they mentioned. Can`t be too serious. What kind of maint. was done on the engine before the trip here ?    I`m not so sure that you have a 1200cc . I noticed the engine has a governor installed. These were not normally installed on the 1200cc engines, but somebody could have put it on after the fact. Your engine # would tell us. I wouldn`t be "twisting" on some things until you find out what engine size you have. There are subtle differences between them and you could possibley get yourself in a "pickle" .  Zen is close to you and if the Medics will let him out of "The Home For VW Toy Addiction" can help you out   Not to fear. There is plenty of help here.
