There seems to be a "special" tool to remove the knobs before we can install the dashpad. Any idea where I may find this "special" tool?

The price seems a little high on this one, but Mid-America Motorworks has one:  http://www.mamotorworks.com/acvw-volkswagen-dash-switch-removal-tool-1-30-6276.html

A local parts store probably has something that will work and doesn't cost quite as much.

Pricey?  come on now, my sanity is worth every dime.  I have two retired tools for this purpose, one a 30+ old snap on driver and the other a factory hazet tool.  Sure, you can do it with needle nose pliers, punches, or God knows what else, but you'll gouge the ever-lovin crap out of the dash, and chew the retainer up making it hard to reinstall it to boot.  I'd say, suck it up, spend the 23 bucks.....what's YOUR time worth?  that is the question. :D

sorry...cheap tools and me just don't get along well......

I know - i know dangerously close to a rant there.  But, for anybody who's ever had to replace a dash switch with one of these destroyed rings on it (  I know you're following me here David), it's the plain and simple truth.

I even went so far as making people sign off on the removal of such stuff just in case of scratches, dents and torn up dash covers. The name of that game was to "Cover Your Butt".  Some people just need to leave some stuff alone. [-X  =;  [-o<
