Karmann Ghia door panel removal. 1971 model

« on: November 08, 2008, 02:01:59 PM »
Please, how do I remove a door panel .... the door handel came off and I need some advise.    This is my Sister-in-Law's car. Recently pulled out of storage and back to running condition.

I can unclip the outer edges of the panel.   However, the removal of the door latch and door handle pull has me a bit stumped.  I do not want to mess up something.   Please a bit of advise would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I've never pulled one off a Ghia, but I'm 99.9% sure they are pretty much like a bug or bus . . . soooo . . .

Remove the window winder handle.  Depending on the year, it may be held on by a clip or roll pin (push in on the pannel to see it) but the later ones have a philips screw holding them on (pop the plastic button out of the center if it has one, if it doesn't have a button, "peal" the entire plastic trim off to get to the screw).  Look closely at how the trim piece and spring behind the winder go in so you can put it back together right. (hopefully they were in there right to start with . . . )

You also have to remove the trim around the door handle.  Raise the handle and pop the plastic piece from underneath it.  With it out of the way, you'll see the screw that holds the trim on.  Take it loose and remove it.  The handle stays on the door.

If it has an arm rest held on with screws from the outside, you'll have to remove it first.  If you can't see the screws that hold it on, it should have a metal strap behind the panel that slides down into a slot on the door.  With all the clips popped loose, and those pieces removed, you should be able to lift straight up out of the slot and remove it.

Hope that helps!   8)
