Jason, This is not a uncommon problem with rev. on the later IRS trannys. You have to treat rev. as if it were made glass. I have repaired a lot of these trannys over the years mostley for rev. gear. You have a choice of replacing the whole unit with a used one and hope its good, Buy a rebuilt unit from a vender and hope they will help you out if something goes wrong (been there, done that.Interesting sometime) or I can repair it for you here in Chatt. I would have to order the parts if I did it. You would get a warr. also.  If you come to the meeting tonight we could talk about it or you could call me .  423-894-3374

Aaron he said it could be fixed. But it's on a rail buggy that I just ride off road. I'm trying to keep the cost down.

OK. Now Jason I would fix it if I could..  I mean because it will work a lot longer. Just think about this. If you get a used one for 100 bucks. And it goes out in 1 month then another 100 for another one and so on you are losing money not saving it. Know what I mean?

Jason, When you do make up your mind about your tranny, I would start looking for a double cover IRS box. They have a rev. gear that is a little stronger. You also could go to a type-2 like a lot of guys do. They have the benefit of  much lower gearing and are very tough. Cost more money, but I think they are worth it. It really is how hard you want to play. If there is going to be one car in yard that is going to be perfect it would be the Buggy/rail. You haven`t lived until you try to tow/drag a wounded Buggy 20-30 miles through creeks, rocks and over mtns with another Buggy. Been there done that.  Off road riding losses its charm when this happens.

Jason, `68 -79 Type 2  trannys look alot alike. There are differences along the way. At one point ,there was a mainshaft difference that would not let you just bolt up a Type-1 engine. I can`t remember the years. Maybe someone out there in "Rail World" knows.  I do know that `68-71 WILL work for sure. If you use a `68-`71 Type-2 you would have to come up with a way to "Hang'" the trans. in . The bell housing on the `72-79 had mounting holes on top and you can hang the tranny from them.
It could be that some company is making mounts to do this already. I would check some VW magazines out and see.Your Rail Buggy would love this. If it can get traction it would scale a wall much less pull stumps.

Jason, I also might mention that you would have to deal with bigger CV joints and axles/stub axles if you go to Type-2. I would talk to some one who deals in this "stuff". There is a guy up here named "Bubba" Roberts who builds Rail Buggys. They are really super. Herb (Our fearless leader) knows how to get in touch with him.

Bugtech I found another rail buggy that has a bus rear tortion in it with a IRS transmission. But he has a bus transmission to go with it. To me thats a good sign that the bus transmission is bad. It has a 1600cc motor that he said the coil was bad on. I thank it's a cobra frame. Someone has cut the front spindals and added metal to lift it. He wants $1400.00 for it. I was thinking if I could get the price down I could put the IRS transmission in my rail and put the bus transmission back in it and hope for the best.

Well its something to think about, but $1400 would go a long way to change your Rail over. If you could get a better deal on Rail#2 you would end up with some extra "goodies" if that is important to you. Bus trannys are not that hard to find. The hang up is ,if you can trust the person to tell you the truth about the unit. Type -2 trannys are tough, but expensive to repair when things go wrong.
