IRS Transaxle

« on: October 15, 2009, 05:37:19 PM »
Well I am ready to start clean-up on my transaxle so that I can install it on my pan.  Before clean-up began, I decided a good visual of the outside would be a good idea.  I noticed that the nose cone, the axle output shaft and the input shaft were all leaking.  As I was draining the transaxle the fluid smelled burnt and there were some metal shavings on the magnetic drain plug.  My questions are....is it feesible to disassemble and replace the seals without special tools?  Who in the club is the transaxle expert (notice I did not say tranny)?  And if I have someone tear into this thing to replace seals and they find more probs, is it less expensive to purchase a new unit or rebuild the one I have.  Thanks.
