intake manifold installation

« on: June 02, 2006, 07:13:56 PM »
I'm about to get my New 1600 long block together with all the stuff from the old engine.  The intake manifold has a notch in the middle that wants to fit right over a bolt holding the case together.  Should I loosen the nut and slide it down?  I hate to loosen anything on a brand new factory long block.  I'm already afraid of tearing it up with the distributor drive gear.
                                        Thanks,

You got it.  Loosen the nut, slide the manifold down over the stud and, once everything is good and the "elbow" ends are all snugged down, tighten the nut down.  Just be careful not to tweak the manifold.  I've seen a couple that required a washer or two to shim a slight gap between the manifold and engine case.

OK,  I loosened the nut but with the manifold resting on the stud  the stud is too short to reinstall the nut.  Should I back it out with double nuts ?  Does the manifold NEED to be fastened or can it just rest on the stud ?

If you have to go through the trouble of messing with stud removal, I'd say just let it ride on the stud.  about 10% of the dual ports I've torn down for whatever reason have actually had the manifold affixed to the stud.  It will still be anchored at both ends by the "elbows" and, if you're retaining the original exhaust or an aftermarket set-up with the original style intake heater connections, these will keep the intake from "twisting" from front to back.  You should be fine with this.  I personally ran one dual port that I knew of like that for 4+ years.

Well ,  the stud was not hard at all to back out.  So I did that and installed the manifold the correct way. This is my first engine transfer and I want to do it to the best of my ability;  with a little help from Volks Folks advisors.
