Intake boots

« on: June 26, 2014, 02:12:27 AM »
I've been working on getting this dual port I've had for a while ready to throw in the bus. It does not seem to leak as much oil as the single port  ;D  I never had many expectations for this engine, but now its time to press it into service. It just needs to last long enough for me to save up to get the single port rebuilt or buy a new single port. Regardless, I thought I would replace some of the the little stuff. It seems it could do with new intake boots. You know the things the guys at autozone and advance don't know what they are even after you show them a picture.

Enough grousing. There seems to be two kind of intake boots: regular and split. The split boots appeal to my laziness, but the seem like they might leak. Does anyone have experience with the split boots?

It so easy to take the intake loose especially out of the car,  go with regular ones

I've got split boots on Homer.  Put a dab of high temp. (red) silicone in the seam and you shouldn't have a problem.

Since you have it all apart anyways  ::) I'd avoid the split ones. Call Chuck at Mainly Foreign and see what he gets on them.

I have to agree!  IF you have the intake apart, use the stock boots!  The only reason to ever use the split boots is if your boots are leaking and need to be replaced, but you don't have any other problems.  You can take off the clamps, tear the old boots off and install the split ones without taking anything else apart.  If you have the intake off, DO NOT put split boots back on it.

Thanks for all the feedback. Zen makes a good point about not having to take anything else off. I like the idea of not having to drop and disassemble the engine just to change the intake. Since it is already out, I'll go with regular, not split, ones. For everyone with dual port engines, how often do you have to replace these boots? Is it part of the every oil change & adjust valves tune up or is this a set it and forget it type of part?

Three things kill the boots . . . Heat, old age and overtighening the clamps.  If you install 'em right and keep the engine clean and properly tuned so it doesn't overheat, they will last for years and years and years.  Maybe longer.

Usually you only have to change them when you rebuild the motor or pull it out of the mud and put one back into service.
