Info on 2002 Jetta GLS needed

« on: October 28, 2007, 11:55:58 AM »
I have a friend who is considering buying a used 2002 Jetta GLS, 144,000 miles on it.  She is wanting to know if she should get it at $3400 or run like heck.  She has heard some things, mainly electrical issues, that make her wonder.  The timing belt was changed at 120,000 miles.
I don't know anything about those cars, so I thought I would ask here for some input to give her.

2.0 liter, man. trans....might be safe.
2.0 liter, auto trans...might not.
1.8 anything, plan on spending money to keep the check engine light off and breather system re-worked (hoses, etc.)...forget about trying to stop the oil leaks.
if it's a 1.8 turbo with a five speed auto., run like the wind.
2.8 VR6, coolant leaks are the norm and often not cheap to remedy.
Electrical...kind of varies depending on the treatment of the car.
Any specific questions, let me know.
Rick

Travis, I think that pretty well covers that project.  I was sort of on the same page with Rick, but I rather have him to speak up since he for some reason is forced to work on those dang things and by now has seen  all "The Good,Bad and Ugly" that VW has shared with us .
