It's not to hard but it's definetly not a fun job. Buy a bearing and a seal kit a mark some time off your calender. You need a special tool to get the bearing out most of the time unless you remove the axle tube. No matter how you do it it wont be fun and you will be filthy when your done.

VW King has a '70 bug ?     It has IRS and not a swing axle. Not a hard job at all.  The only special tool you would need is the socket to get the CV joint loose at the wheel and a pair of  snap ring pliars and a 36mm socket to take the wheel/hub off.
Its 12:30 AM .  I will tell you more tomorrow

Here is something else to consider.    Before you declare that you have a bad axle bearing ,  check and be sure that the 36mm axle nut is tight. Have you had the rear hubs off lately ?  A loose hub will raise hell if its loose much less stripping the splines out leaving you stranded.  You can jack the car up and try to shake the wheel. If its loose check and see if the whole axle and wheel  is loose or the just the hub is loose on the axle. If its just loose on the axle, go ahead and take the hub/wheel off and inspect the splines in the hub.
Proper torque on the 36mm nut is 217 ft pd and some more.
Let me know what you find.

Hey, Glad you got fixed up.  You said a "shop" repaired your car. Would you care to say what shop ?    Russ is making a list of shops that are VW friendly to post on the site. Chattanooga doesn't have a VW only shop anymore and some people need a little more help than can be done in the back yard.
Hope to see you at the Cruise.
