I have a 76 vw bus with a 2liter engine. I can not find a timeing mark on it. And don't say it's on the v-belt pully. You can't see the pully while the engine is running so no timeing light marks. can anyone hellp???

I'm gonna say it...somewhat.
If you look on the fan itself where the belt rides you will find a "v" shaped notch somewhere on the perimeter of the fan, on the inner rim. It may not be whitened. You can put the engine in neutral (not running), take an adjustable wrench (or 22mm open ended wrench) and turn the fan by the alternator pulley nut, and look for the "v" notch that way. Use your fingernail to feel for it if you have to . When you do find it, put a little white dot there for timing purposes.

Like Gobus said: Its on the inner rim of the belt pulley. This mark is hard to find sometimes.
This might help. Take your dist.cap off and turn the engine with that 22mm wrench until the rotor is pointing somewhere close to # 1 cly. ( the little notch on the dist. case where the cap sits) then run you finger nail along the back pulley rim. You will find it somewhere between 10:00 and 1:00 position.
Does the engine have the plastic timing scale on the left side of the pulley? If not , get one because you are already in trouble unless some clever Dude marked the fan cover with paint or a punch mark. "0" degree mark is not in the same place as a type-1 Bug. Timing has to be correct unless you love to spend big bucks on heads and pistons & clys.
Good luck and keep us posted [-o<
