I goofed up!

« on: February 23, 2006, 12:44:23 PM »
I was working on my 1500 out of my beetle last night.  When I was installing my oil cooler I misread the torque specs and broke off the stud clean to the case.   I'll probably take it to get drilled out.  What I was wondering is if you know what size stud that is?

Thanks,
Brian

It's either an M6 or an M8.  The doghouse style coolers used the M8 and older coolers used the M6 . . . but blocks get swapped around and things get upgraded and modified so you can't go 100% by the style of oil cooler.  Typically, a M6 nut uses a 10mm wrench and an M8 uses a 13mm.

Brian , Like Zen said it could be 6mm or 8mm. I can't imagine you breaking a 8mm stud( 13mm nut) . You didn't say what size the nut was. Also like Zen stated ,over the years cases got swapped around and if you changed styles of coolers(doghouse to straight vertical) there was a stud that was furnished 6mm on one end and 8mm on the other end and you just "flipped " it over to fit whatever size case hole you had. You also have to pay attention to what style of seals you use. There is a set of cooler seals that are bigger on one side than the other. I don't know what you are dealing with, so I can't tell you what to use. If you have one of these dual threaded studs with the 6mm into the case and 8mm nut its no wonder it "popped" They are very tender.
There are a lot of folks that get these cominations of cooler-v-case wrong. I know of at least 3 styles of coolers from 1961 -1970. May be more. They will all work if you have the right kind seals and hardware.

I measured it last night and it measured out to be 6mm on one side and 8mm on the other.  The 6mm side is the one that snaped off even with the case.  Thanks for the info.  Is there any warnings or advise on drilling it out?

Brian, I don't have a older case to measure the depth of the hole. Maybe Zen or someone does. You are going to have to be very careful and not to drill off center. You have what we call a "Little Hole " case and I don't know which cooler you have. YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS so you know which combo of seals you need to use or you might end up with a BIG leak.  Do the remaining 2 studs on the cooler 6mm or 8mm ?

Brian , Are you sure about 8mm ?    Are you running a "dog house" cooler or a straight up black cooler ?  You have me a little confused . I don't recall the old straight black cooler ever having 8mm studs unless someone got creative .

OK !  Makes a little more sence . Someone must have bored the case for 8mm ,but didn't bore the little hole. Only the Super Beetle case(71 up) had 2 holes bored to 8mm and had the 8mm stud.( U.S. spec) The case vin # would tell the year the case was made.  Cases # starting with a " H " would be "67-69.  Numbers starting with a "B" is "70 only. "A"is '71 up. These are all U.S. spec.

Thanks for all the info.  I've decided to hand it over to a machine shop.  I should be back in business soon.

[-o< O Great Godfather. If I ask nicely will you lay your hands upon my head when I see you at the show and impart some of your knowledge into this empty space between my ears???

Humbly bows low and exits the room.........

Edit: Let me rephrase that!! Will you lay your hands gently upon my head.
Preferably without having a wrench, hammer, or tire tool in it at the time too.....
