I've got no brakes!

« on: March 25, 2006, 08:12:42 PM »
Well after test driving the 66 that's for sale I noticed my brakes suck.So I decided to do the right thing and replace them.I broke out the book and replaced all the shoes deciding that next time around I might get new drums. Afterward I did all the super fun adjusting as noted in the book(I have got to get the proper tool for this someday) Anyways I have no brakes now.

They sucked before but they worked. I tried to bleed them but there isn't any air in the lines. No broken lines, wheelcyliders seem fine. Im stumped or i just dont want to admitt it's the master cylinder. Seems like I would not have had any brakes if it were bad to start with.

So somebody tell me what retarded thing I've done now cause I'm lost.
Ideas?

I went out and messed with it again and can't find a leak anywhere. WTF?

Did you do anything other than replace the shoes?  If not, the most likely culprit is the shoes aren't adjusted out far enough.  If you've never installed brake shoes on a Beetle but you have on other cars, it's a pretty common problem to leave the adjustment loose.  Can you pump them several times and get a decent pedal?

Nope Zen just shoes. I pumped till my leg about fell off , nada!
My plan is to go out in the morning and adjust the breaks tight(over tight) and re-bleed it. I've read every thing I can about this type of problem I could find on samba.Sounds pretty common and pretty much another little vw quirk that you have to figure out.Gotta love it.

When adjusting the brakes I should be adjusting both the top and bottom adjusters right?
I had em tight a few times then when I centered em up they were lose again. Maybe some more adjusting?I also noticed the adjuster leif springs are mostly busted/unuseable.. I found some, should be fun to replace/weld.

I need to win the lotto so I can strip this sucker down and start from scratch. I just love finding all the hokey crap the previous owner did.
I think I found most of it.

Finally, they work . What a pain. But a bleeder valve snaped off. It some how was sealed up when it did. So I'll be replacing  the front wheel cyliders and doing it all over again.Gotta love it.

If the wheel cylinder is good other than the bleeder, if you can get the broken one out with an easy-out, you can get replacement bleeders pretty cheap.

Just my 2 cents but a wheel cyl was like 7 bucks on line

Like every thing else spare parts never hurt. Somehow it broke when it was tight and isn't even leaking. I figured get the parts and then try some surgery if I can't get it out then use the parts. Some how SC i thought you would say put some gum on it.But good point on the parts being cheap.
