Hurst Bug Trigger lock shifter?

« on: May 18, 2012, 10:25:08 AM »
Hey,
In my most recent acquisition, there was a hurst marked trigger lock shifter simular to the Empi junk now made.  I'll get some photos, but I want to know where I can get the ball that sits on top.  can an empi one be used?
I think I have a wooden one somewhere in my piles of junk that came out of Kermit.
But it is an allen set one not a screw on.
Shifter currently has a screw on Morosey? aluminum T handle shifter top on it.  Talk about difficult to operate a trigger lock when shifting with a t handle...

I just love shifters that test and destroy syn. rings in the tranny. I promote using them because I use to make a pile of money on tranny repairs. ;D ;D

Those shifters have value...

especially to those who are slaves to trends, and not knowledgeable about the wear and tear they do.

If I had one, i'm thinkin' it would have to make it up on the auction block.

I've ordered a replacement ball for the top.
It really was the diamond in the dung of this beetle I have.

I was hoping that "hurst" was the bomb.

What kind of damage do Hurst shifters do? My beetle came with one and I haven't thought much about it.

The shaft that goes into the cup on the shift rod is much shorter(pivot point is moved down) so if you move the shift lever at a normal speed, the lower portion of the lever is going at a much greater speed. Just think what happens when you really throw a shift on the poor thing trying to beat a Vega off the line. The poor syncros are busting their butts trying to keep up with things. A whole lot of syncros die on the spot taking the gear train with them. Another problem is the reverse lock-out doesn't always work right. Talking about re-forming rev. idler into a smooth bushing. It sounds great when that happens.  $$$$$$$$$$$ I love it

If you really want to feel racey and you are part Monkey(long arms) just saw about 4" off you gear shift lever and you can almost make a cheap Hurst and do just as much damage for the price of a hacksaw blade. OMG !!!!  I hope SC doesn't see this.

So its not that the shifter damages as much as it allows the driver to mess everything up quicker!

Does the quick shift kit do the same?

YES .    Even if you drive and shift gears normally , It still put a hurt on the syncro's . Its like trying to speed shift a stock unit. I have seen people shift so fast that the hockey stick will get caught and jamed between the 3 levers and you are STUCK in 2nd or 3rd gear.

I just put one in the 917, an EMPI with the 9" stick. Shifting it smoothly involves doing what was mentioned above-slow movement pushing it into gear-plus a heaping helping of mechanical sympathy. Feel and listen to when the engine speed is lined up to the new gear and let it slip in. Double-clutch downshifts are a must, as well, so start practicing!

VW spent a long time/money figuring out what works best. Why do people try to second guess them just to try to look racey ?

...because at a certain point there's no turning back?

The stock shifter looked like it was giving Steve McQueen the finger. I just couldn't have that.

PS-not my car because, once again, I couldn't get my computer to upload my pic. ??? >:(
Anyway, take away the orange and decals (which I plan to add) and you've got my car.

Hey, I'm the guy who can pull his FV engine after a racing season and still have paint on the clutch face! Mechanical sympathy-I haz it!
