How screwed am I? ENGINE!

« on: January 04, 2008, 11:24:24 PM »
Not in the head , well sort of. My bug crapped out and started strugglin about a half mile from my house felt like it was runnin on 3 cylinders.
The 1/2 side was soundin bad and gas was spurtin back out of the carb more than it ever should.

Anyways it had a push rod on number 1 slip of the dang rocker arm.
The valve cover cracked, one of the valve lashes was in the cover, the other was stillin place but smashed. the valve was stuck in the upmost position and the spring well it aint springy no more.

So how bad is that? I cant replace the spring with the dang head still on,tho I'm tempted to try. Logic says I need to pull the engine, pullthe head and check for damage ont the piston surface, check for damage on the head and react accordingly.God I'm sick of messin with this little booger.

So Godfather give me the scoop am I right and just dont wanna admit what I gotta do or is this somewhat common and there's an easy fix.
This seriously effects weather I've got a spare case or not so let me know what ya think. If I gotta pull it to figure it out Bobs gonna be waitin awhile on that case,If not maybe we can work a deal for the spare. Either way I'l make some calls for him,I know someone who might have a spare or 2?

If there is nothing actually wrong with the vavle, you can replace the spring cap and keepers with the head still on the engine.  There's an adaptor you can get to hook an air hose to your spark plug hole.  Air pressure will hold the vavle closed and there is a small tool that will compress the spring with cap on top of it.  You just slide the spring and cap in place over the valve, put the keepers in place and take the pressure off the spring.  Put your rockers back on, adjust your valves and your back on the road.

From what I can see there is no damage other than the lash cap and keepers,oh and the valve cover. Maybe I got lucky but I doubt it.

Scott , You said the valve was stuck in the up most postion ? What do you mean ?  The valve is stuck open ?   Can you move the valve in and out with the spring off ?

I think I would be looking for the reason this happened.
Lash cap ?   Why are you running lash caps ?

In the past, I have seen several ways this has happened.
 1-- 7,000 rpm valve float.
2--valve spring retainer worn out letting the keepers pull though.
 3-- broken valve spring
4--excessive side play of the rocker arm allowing the rocker to miss the valve and hit the edge of the spring retainer flipping a keeper out. broken  shim or clip came off the rocker arm shaft itselve allowing rocker to "move over" hitting the retainer.
5-- Rocker shaft badly worn ,and if you have a hi-lift cam this makes the rocker arm "jump" sideways due to rocker arm getting into a area where it hasn't been before. This happened to me one time.
6--  push rod collapsed or bowed up due to # 1 above
7--  Valve guide moving in and out of the head. Hard to see sometimes
8-- Valve seat moving in and out in the head. ( Type-4 syndrome)
9--  Or the engine "ate' something and got caught behind behind the valve for a instance.
10-- Valve adjuster loosened up and backed out allowing pushrod to "jump out" and jam up things.
You could do the Zen trick if you want to,but I would really look at the valve closely around the keeper grooves in the stem. old worn out keepers ??      " These are a few of my favorite things"  Is there a song in there somewhere ?

#3 is the winner! Valve spring broke. I'm gonna let him sit and think about it for awhile. Then I'm gonna pull it and check it out real good before he runs again. While I got it all out somethins got me thinkin of going back stock.

I talked to Scott yesterday, David.  He said the same thing to me and after I got real quiet, he said, "I know, that's what you and David have already been saying".....
I smiled, but didn't gloat too much, and told him that I was hanging up the phone with him to call you and give you the good news.
I figured out this one a long time ago, thanks mostly to the stubborn opinion of some old man with white hair....wonder who that was?............

And you wonder where the white hair came from ???

I like driving my car to much to keep it all hopped up on duel carbs. Maybe later when I get a putt putt older bug,but for now I'd rather get closer to stock and drive.

Hopped up with duel carbs ?     Maybe a week or two in 2-carb rehab will work. You could go also
