How do you get rid of deadspot with new PCT34

« on: July 13, 2009, 12:02:24 PM »
Recently had our 71 Superbeetle rebuilt.  After around two weeks of driving it developed a deadspot when you first accellerate.  It's really bad when the engine is cold.  I bought a new carberator from Mid-America Auto Parts (made in China) hoping it would solve the problem.  Even with a new carberator the problem is the same.

Other info:  Distributor is a 009.  Not sure how old it is. Also the transmission is an autostick.

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.   It seems too simple of a problem to be driving me so crazy.

Thanks

You have the double whammy with the 009 and the autostick.
The new 34's are not vaccumed in the needed port to run the autostick system correctly and the 009 hates the 34-pict 3 carbeurator as well.
The 009 also isn't curved right for the autostick.

You can port the autostick to a different part of the carbeurator and get it to work, but the 009 and the 34 pict 3 do not play well together.  They will give you the dead spot that you have.

I am in Varnel GA, if you you ever drive this way I'd like to see another functional AStick.  That is what I drive every other week when the temps are below 90 deg.

Take care.
KC :D

Two other options.  Replace the 009 with a dist. with a vacuum unit or replace the carb with the 30-31 carb kit that has the adapter to the manifold. I would make sure your Ing. timing is correct before you do anything. Since you did OK for a couple weeks before the problem, Your points may have closed up a bit and that changes the Ing. timing. Point gap should be 016. Total advance should be 32 degrees @ about 1800 rpms.  Keep us posted.

if it ran good for a while you may want to check the valves and guides.sometimes new heads can be a bear to get either seated to run right.but ditto on the 009 if a little valve adjustment doesn't work

The only way I've ever been able to get rid of the deadspot with any 34 carb (new, old, made in Germany, made in China . . . all of them) is to replace it with a 30-31.  Yes, you can get rid of the deadspot with everything being correct and using the correct distributor, but it's SOOOOOO much easier with a 30-31.  With that said, check your points (condition and adjustment), valve adjustment and timing like everyone said.  Those are the most likely culprets that caused a change in the way it runs.

Good point on checking your valve lash. Sometimes the valves tighten up after awhile when they are new . We always had to reset the valves after 600-1000 miles.

i have even seen new high dollar heads that had valve guides so tight on the stem the guides would work loose, just enough to blead down alittle.takes a little to get them to idle like this and they may occasionaly smoke a bit but they run for ever anyhow

009 dist.... 34 pict carb..... autostick......

I'd remove one of the evils first, then try to adjust out the rest......and the trans is pretty darned heavy....

But seriously, i have always had better luck with a 30 31 pict carb.  Same to be said for running a vacuum type dist, just make sure that if it's been sitting on a shelf for a long time that the vacuum unit actually is in working order, because if you have a dead spot now, wait till you put  a bad vacuum dist on....

Like the late, great Will Rogers said, "There are three kinds of men. The one that learns by reading. The few who learn by observation. The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for themselves."  Any advice I have to offer is just trying to keep you from peeing on the fence, 'cause I KNOW what that feels like!
