Hey! 67 bug dead again! ohh David.

« on: October 02, 2005, 07:02:12 PM »
So I was going to circle yer wagens And pulled out and made it to hamilton place mall. A light came on that I thought was oil pressure but turned out to be the gen light. I found that out after changing the sending unit and that stupid valve that controls the pressure,oh yeah btw hot oil sucks for hand lotion. Any ways I spun the generator hoping it was some thing easy. By that I mean I did the little polarization thing. I replaced the regulator with a new one and my voltage is still 12 volts and not charging to 14. I have another generator that I got today just in case. I really hope that I don't need it.I also pushed down on the brushes and everything else I could find short of a volt meter. Any ideas?
I drove a chevy to a vw show! By the time I got there it was 1pm and people were packing it in and trailering there queens.
Look for a 67 Herbie clone for sale soon if it keeps it up.

Could be the gen.  What brand of reg did you get ?  Hope it wasn't Auto-Zone. There is a little trick  I know to tell you which one is the bad dude.

Come on you know I got a bosch generator  But the reg is a pile of crap pep boys and I couldn't find a bosch.  I just messed with it and found out about polarizing the regulator and the light went out but I'm still not getting 14 volts. It is getting 13 volts. This sucker is taunting me. My car will now be known as herbie. It has a mind of it's own and doesn't do anything I tell it do. Look for pics tommorrow :o  I'm outta of tigers so..... I need you to look it over. I'm also having oil pressure problems. I don't think my guage is very accurate. It reeds 40psi at a cold start and after it warms up it reads almost nothing. Let me know if ya feal like tinkering on it. Oh jim Lockhart says hi. Saw him the other day when I went by his shop snoopin around.

Get rid of the crappy regulator.  Bosch makes a solid-state unit that works like a charm.

When I was running Auto Zone regulators, I had to replace the battery about every 4 months, the starter about every 6 months, generators about every 6 months, . . . flashers, bulbs and fuses burnt out constantly . . . from time to time, wires in the dash would get hot and start smoking for no apparent reason.  Since going to the Bosch solid-state regulator last winter, all of those electrical gremlins have disappeared!  In fact, the only electrical issue I've had in nearly a year happened when I left my lights on all day at work.    After getting a boost and driving home (13 miles), the battery was holding a good, strong charge.

You can get the Bosch unit at Al Johnson's VW in Dalton, or from American Foreign in Dalton or Tri-State Imports in Cleveland.  Mainly Foreign may have it as well . . . but I'll bet it's a lot cheaper everywhere else.  I paid somewhere around $35 including tax at Al Johnson's.  It was the best $35 I've ever spent on an electrical component!

Scott., Didn't we talk about your gen when you were at my house ? Seems that I told you that you had a long case 200 watt bus gen on your car. These are pretty rare critters and I would bet the gen you bought is a 180 watt gen. which is a tad shorter. If this is the case you will have to replace the round tin that the gen. is bolted to or the belt will be out of line. Where did you get the gen ?  Just because a gen. will "motor'" doesn't mean it will charge properly.  Bosch said years ago to " never polarize their regs. They said the points COULD weld together and your gen would go "Nuts" and "light up" in just a min.  I have seen as much as 18-20 volts out of those gen. right before they turn red and catch on fire.
Don't know about your oil pressure. Guage ? Does your light work ? It takes about 5 psi to turn the light out. These engines are not like "rice burners" with 10 zillion psi. What grade of oil are you using ? Its not common for these Bug engines to have oil pressure problems without you  hearing something or overheating.
I can look at it after 4:00 pm today if you want me to. Just call me first

so from everything I am hearing my crappy reg probably went out was replaced with a crappy reg and thats about it. The engine is running great I dont think there is a problem the pressure is just squirelly on the guage. Seein how its mechancal any small debris in the little line would probabaly cause that. I'm using 10w30 and it seems way thin what would be better? I'll get a bosch reg today and try to work this out. I hate to waste your time until I ve done everything I could.
Thanks guys.

It's a long one seems to be the same. I had to search the whole show and everyone looked at me like a nut when I told them for a 67 bug. Except 1 guy from South Carolina, he had one . After a long speech and $60 he let me take it.

Good Deal, Glad you are back on the road. Just remember you are dealing with a 38 year beast much less a VW who has not forgotten who lost the war.    You say VW and Bosch in the same breath. 8)

I know the gens good it was charging fine. The reg is being crazy crap and even the bosch one. Ideas?

daed ok dead ok dang it. If I just barely touch the power to the little blue wireon terminal 61 then the light goes out and the charging begins! I'm not a rocket scientist but something is shorting this thing or some thing. Grounds? It just needs a little boost and it's good I'll try tommorrow and see if it's dead again. is there something on the fuse box that could cause it? Taking wires off putting them back? I'm gonna remind this thing who won the war! I'm Gonna put a size 10 jump boot in its @#$.

I would still bet on the gen. Been there, done that. Coming and going field coils maybe. Don't ask me why that happens , but it does. Like I said before, I have a trick way to check that but my meter leads won't reach to East Ridge.
