Ron, If you are pretty sure about your idle RPM, I'm puzzle why you are showing 27-28 degrees advance at 800 RPM.( a little fast). Do you have access to a tach that you could beg ,borrow or steal to nail down the idle thing ?  I could belive 10-15 degrees at idle
You could have a dist. that has a very short advance curve due to weak springs or the mechanical portion of you dist. is stuck and not rotating fully.  Take your dist cap off and try to twist your rotor button back and forth. It should move a few degrees and spring back when you turn it loose. If it stays put where you put it , the mech. advance portion of your dist. is locking up or your vacumn advance is dragging on something and making timing impossible to set right.
I have seen the linkage on the vacumn unit get hindered by the electronic unit in the dist. also. Look at that.
You also could suck on the vacumn hose (taste bad) with the cap off and see if the point plate moves and returns freely.

ummm, maybe the rpms are a little higher than 800 at idle.  By listening, I wouldn't think they we're much higher than that.   I did check the the vacum advance last weekend by using the suck method and the plate seemed to move pretty free, didn't take much vacum for the plate to move.
I'll check around and see about the tach, that seems to be what I really need and not guess.. at 50 my ears are getting a liitle deaf..
The problem when at idle, sometimes the engine will start rocking and that's when it's hard to tell the exact degree. it could bounce between 24-28 degrees..
What about the 58 degrees wide open, would that make sense aobut the vacum being hooked up.
Thanks David,
Ron

I see where Sears, Autozone &  Advance sells a Actron Digital timing light. It has a digital tachometer built in, timing light & does advance. do you know anything about this model or at least it should work?  thanks

it should work... but i like the advance timing light that harbor freight sells for 29.99... both of the ones i have had worked great... though i will tell you that they will not resist car fires   thus the reason that i bought a second one!

ok, got the timing light with tach.
First, the bug idles at 1040 rpms, can't go any lower, idle adjustment screw is all the way in.
Got the timing set at 32 degrees at the 1040 rpms..

As long as I leave the vacum plugged off I stay at 32 degrees advance even as I raise the RPMS up 2500 rpms.

Once I re-connect the vacum back to the distributor, the higher the rpms, the higher the advance.  After re-connection at 2500 RPMS, I'm up around 58 degrees total advance.

I pick up almost 30 more degrees when the vacum is hooked up vs not hooked up.

1. Is idle OK around 1050 rpms ? if not, any other way to idle it down more?
2.  I feel timing is right on now, but what about total advance. Is this ok? do I leave my vacum disconnect and stay at 32 degrees?
3. Is there something wrong is is everything ok now that I do have the timing set?
Thanks
Ron
