Help with gland nut

« on: July 08, 2010, 12:02:21 AM »
I was trying to replace the trans seal and main seal on the baja today and ran into some problems. I tried using the breakerbar, cheater and angle iron pieces I used to remove the last gland nut, but after applying my weight to the end, the breaker bar broke. So I returned it to HF and they quickly replaced it (fo' fre'!). That one lasted a few bounces longer, but broke just the same. I drug the engine up on a utility trailer and headed to my dad's garage.

All of his impact guns didnt cut it. The torque multiplier- broker one it got good and tight. So I headed back home.

I grabbed the piece of steel railing I cut off the wrought iron stair case in my house and decided to weld the extra (chinese) 36mm socket onto the end of it. I now have 10' 36mm box end if anyone needs to borrow it!  ;D

The weak link became the angle. I welded steel all around it to reinforce it. I put a piece of box steel inside the angle and a piece of steel pipe under the two bolt holes and overlapping the box piece on the inside.  This is when the fit really hit the shan... It bent the piece on around and broke the engine mounting stud off!!! and then the angle was so distorted that I couldn't get the nut off it.  :(

So now I'm back where I started: Needing the get the flywheel off to replace the main.

The broken list (so far):
-Two (2) breaker bars
-One (1) piece of reinforced angle
-One (1) torque multiplier
-One (1) engine stud
-One (1) Nick's back

Any advice would be appreciated as an otherwise simple task that was supposed to cost me $4 for the seal has now put me back quite a bit in tools.

For those who are concerned, the trans seal went in without incident!

Of course... pics:

Me to.  Ask William why.  Sounds like your Dad needs to buy a impact wrench or buy more air. I wished that more people would ask for help before getting in over their heads.

over my head? Nah... I just spent a day breaking tools instead of getting anything done....  Now I just need to find a good piece of scrap to weld an old busted pressure plate to it. I knew there would be an easy way of taking it to David's but not at 9 PM....

9pm ????     Nobody in their right mind needs to be working on a dang VW at that time of day.  Thats "Toddy" time. When you start breaking tools and stuff at that time of day you will invent a whole new language and start kicking the dog or worse as you head to bed  after putting a splint and band-aids on all of your damaged body parts and pissed off at the same time  ::) ;D ;D ;D   I learned that a looooong time ago. ::) ::)

If you've "been there, done that" enough times, you don't have to hear or see to know what happens.   ;D

If you can catch Kyle at home, he has an impact that will either break it loose  . . . or just plain break it.  Either way, you'll be done with it.

Well it looks like I did get in over my head... even after having to ask for help.... I took it by the Godfather's (while also picking up the fresh rebuild for Bonnie!) and we hit it with his impact. No dice! It wouldn't budge.

So I think I'll be trying to meet up with you Rick, to see about trying to knock this gland nut off and to settle up on the flywheel...

I work a regular 8ish to 5ish job, what are the hours of your shop?

Same hours here.... We're in the area of Lee Hwy next to the old McKay's bookstore.  Give me a call to make sure i am here/can help you before you come by... Might be able to try during lunch time... Fridays are crazy busy, and we often cut out a little early...

For the first time in 46 years Nick had a gland nut I couldn't get off.  Rick may get it off seeing that he  should have a big high C.F.M. compressor at his job. Hope so. Keep your  fingers crossed that the nut doesn't pop off . Not good.
