Headlights

« on: February 27, 2014, 01:27:28 PM »
Headlights in the bus don't come on anymore when you turn on the switch. I've replaced the switch, same issue. Long ago, I figured out I could bridge terminals 56 and 30 on the switch and my headlights will come on. So I wired in a toggle switch. That wiring fell apart recently, and instead of redoing the toggle, I'd really like to get to the real issue and figure out why they don't work. Any ideas on where to start? The switch is hooked up correctly according to the wiring diagram.

Ok. Do either the high beams or the low beams work?

If not either, I'd say check the head light relay. It's most likely the problem. If its not that, then it could be the highbeam low beam switch. Lastly (or maybe firstly!), I'd say some of the wiring is messed up.

In looking at this:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/wiring/baybus_79.jpg
it appears that 30 is the incoming power to the switch. 56 is the out going power from the switch. 56 goes from the switch to the relay. The relay then splits to either bulb. The diagram is a little confusing because the high/low switch is magically in between the split and the bulbs, without indicating how that works.

Now that I look at it a little closer, the X with the arrows looks more like the high/low beam switch instead of a relay. If that is the case, then the switch splits the high/lows and the relay is magically missing!

I'm more confused now than ever!

I bought a new headlight switch for Homer once.  It was bad right out of the box.  Bought another one from another company.  It was bad right out of the box too.  I finally installed a used switch and got my lights working correctly.  I've had that experiance with a lot of electrical parts for old VWs . . . a lot of the new stuff is junk.

I fixed it, finally. Kinda hard to explain what it was, but I've always had these two weird relays under the dash. They aren't factory, and my best guess is they somehow went with the air conditioning my bus used to have.

I traced all the wires coming from the headlight switch to where they were supposed to go. One of them was going to fuse number 7, where it was also jumpered to another wire that went to the strange relays. The thing was, there was no other wires going into fuse 7 and neither Nick nor I could locate on the wiring diagrams anything that was designated for fuse 7. So I guess somehow it was an "extra" that maybe dealers could use for accessories they installed, such as A/C. (The book says fuse 7 is for "accessories" too.)

That wire is supposed to be going to switched power, it energizes the headlight relay when the key is on. I moved it to fuse 10 which is switched power for windshield wipers and the rear defrost (which no longer works anyways). Now my headlights work as they should!

While I was in there, I took the opportunity to straighten out some more of the bad wiring. Turns out I had ran the hot wires for the radio, clock, and cigarette lighter off the wrong side of the fuse so they were not protected. I moved them and made everything under there much neater.

Also fixed my dome light, which turned out to be the bulb. For some reason I was thinking it was a wiring issue and never looked at it. I don't remember the last time she had a working dome light.

Zen, I have an extra good working (original) headlight switch. It's yours as soon as you get Homer running!

Thanks, but I don't need one.  The headlight switch is one of the few things on Homer that doesn't need attention.  At least it didn't when I parked it.  I'd have to put a battery in it to find out.  Maybe I'll do that this weekend.
