Headlight Question.

« on: December 29, 2010, 11:56:34 PM »
I have noticed that my headlights are " yellowish " ( weak ) in regular mode and fine in high beams. I have read the other post of weak headlights here in the tech forums but wondered if there is a difference between the 6 volt system he has a 12 volt system i have on the possible problem or if headlights can go " weak " in regular mode and still be good in high beams. Thanks for any info as i have 3 days off this weekend to check things out. ...........

It sounds like corroded connections somewhere.

It's been a while since I worked on a Beetle's lights, but I'm thinking that the brights and dim are wired through different fuses.  When I got my Dasher from Rick, about half the lights didn't work.  I started messing with the fuses to see if any were blown and the more I wiggled 'em around, the more lights came on and the brigher they got.  I finally took all the fuses out, brushed the connectors with a small brass brush and istalled new fuses . . . and the radio even came on.

If you do find it's a bad connection somewhere, a little dab of dielectric grease on the connection after you've cleaned it up will give you several extra years of corrosion resistance vs. just plugging the clean connection back together.

I've heard that the pink eraser on the good ol' #2 will clean the little terminals up nicely!

Once you've cleaned up all the corrosion, consider an upgrade to H4 housings and bulbs. They are much brighter than the sealed beam halogens.

I just put H4's in the Jap Beetle, COOL!
They also have the parking lights in the housings.
This is a big plus in that the Jap beetle has no other parking lights in the front...

well i took the headlights out and cleaned the contacts there. put it all back together and still the same result as before. will move on to other contacts now. However now i can not get the passenger side headlight ring back on. It is like it is too small or some reason. I really need too learn to leave things alone like the Godfather has told me...  ;D
