Headlight And Licence plate question

« on: October 11, 2008, 02:09:09 PM »
I found out the in last few days that at night when leaving work when i turn on my lights the passenger headlight does not come on and neither does the licence plate light. Well all i have to do is lightly tap the headlight and it comes on fine and stays on. If i turn off the car it will need to be taped again. All the other lights work fine ( turn signals etc ). I even checked the wires connections behind the firewall insalation on the passenger side where the wires to the licence plate light are and they are all connected. Even the bulb there is good. Does any one have any insights as to what it could be. I am also going to check the wires on the light switch to see if there are any loose ones there......

I'm with the 'nut on this one, sounds like the element has become disconnected and  when the bulb gets tapped, the element crosses the contact and lights up.  Then when you shut it off, it disconnects again.  You can do the same thing with a regular blown house bulb sometimes.
I still have your sunvisors... Big dummy was admiring them last night...
Take care,
KC

hey Casey thanks for the info. Between you and Scott saying basicly the same thing i will definately be getting a new headlight tomorrow for it. I hope that will cause the licence plate light to come on also.  After that all i need to get is 2 barrel nuts and 4 engine tin screws and basicly the car will be back together. You keep those visors out of every ones sight.....

I've seen the disconnected filiment thing happen in sealed beams several times; not just in old Bugs either. It can happen in anything with the old sealed beam headlights.

The license light is probably a corroded connection somewhere in the circuit.  Look at a wiring diagram and trace down all the connectors, unplug them, clean them, make sure they are tight when you plug 'em back together . . . and dab a little dielectric grease on them so they won't corrode . . . at least not for a decade or two.

well guys i went to the parts store and got 2 of the headlights. One to use and one too keep for the next time. I put the new one in and IT WORKED. Thanks guys for the help. Now all i have to do is figure out the licence plate light. Any one have an extra that would fit mine if this one is bad. Just a thought because all the connections etc seem to be good. I pulled out the bulb holder thing and when i twisted it too look at it the light came on but when i put it back straight it went out. I will keep working on it....

The ground is bad. Probably where the assembly bolts to the decklid if I was a betting man I'd bet on that.

Question on Turn signal problems on 2001 beetle

« Reply #12 on: October 23, 2008, 08:07:00 AM »
My turn signal has basically stopped working.  When I turn it on it will flash a time or two and then stop.  Has anyone else experienced this or does anyone know what is going on and can give some advice?

Keep in mind she is referring to a New Beetle and not a classic.
