Guess who's doing a brake job!

« on: August 24, 2010, 09:18:00 AM »
Me!! This morning as I was backing out of the drive way I heard a POP sound come from the rear passenger tire of the bus and the brake pedal went right to the floor.  :(

I was running late so i didn't have time to see what was what other than the brake fluid running onto the ground.

So, off to Sears for a new jack and jack stands and then to the parts store. Woohoo.

So far all I've done is fix this thing yet I find myself shopping Craigslist and Samba for another one. I think I have a sickness or something.

 ;D

If your first didn't break all the time, it would get boring.  Consider it practice for the next one....  ;D

Oh , I might add that this affliction does not go away for sometime. I draw your attention to ASbug(KC) The ex-newby who started with one Bug and now has a herd in the back yard. You will learn a whole new vocabulary and start talking in Tonques . Even meanings of english phases will change . Example :  Hey Hon , The baby needs new shoes.  You really mean a new set of tires for the van, not the Kids .  You will be able to keep you wife fooled for awhile then things start to hit the fan if you catch my drift. Just keep a helmet close by ;D ;D

I got 3ton jackstands at harbor freight a few weeks ago for 12 bucks or so. I couldn't justify the 2.5 ton sears ones for twice as much... I also picked up a 1-13/16'' socket for the 46mm nut. I don't know when they switch to the large one; you might have the 36mm wheel nut.either way good luck!

btw were you at China moon yesterday during lunch? I thought I saw Ethyl sitting out there

Rear brake nut on a type 2s were 36mm early on, then a "big nut" (46mm) was offered as an option beginning in 1964.  All bay window buses use a 46mm axle nut.

Thanks for the info all. So I need a 46mm socket and a 6' length of pipe!. Gotcha.

Nick, that was Ethyl you saw in the China Moon lot, I work in the building next door and we park in that lot.

So maybe I'll hit Harbor Freight for those jack stands. If I remember correctly I already own a set but they're in Michigan in my dad's barn. :(

and Mill and Mine has a 46mm socket with a 3/4 inch drive for less than other places I've seen. About $15. They don't have a 3/4 breaker bar though..... I'm still trying to get the rear nut off penelope...

I knew my ears were burning...
I'll have you know that I am down to 4 beetles now.
I think I have the SE Lovebug sold if I can ever get these photos to load...
That'll leave me just the ASBug and the Jap Beetle and the Vert.

I need to get rid of one of them, but just cannot bring myself to sell the ASBug.

It is easy to get the fever and your friends will not be much help, they wil begin to find them for you and even encourage your habbit.
If they offer you any good deals, they are not your friends... You should send them to me! LOL.
KC - I can quit whenever I want, I just don't want....
LOL

Well the rear brakes are done.  ;D
I plan on tackling the front next paycheck. New wheel cylinders, shoes and a new master cylinder. The master is showing some slight dampness on the end closest to the brake pedal or I'd put that off another month. I REALLY like stopping when I need to though so I guess I'll get 'er done.

I must not have bled them very well tho. I started out Monday morning with a very strong full pedal. Now it's feeling spongy and I have less pedal.

I need to win the Lotto.
