GREASE - Have you used any lately???

« on: April 05, 2003, 06:41:37 PM »
We all change our oil probably more than we should (if you can do such a thing) but how long has it been since you crawled up under your precious piece of German machinery and put a grease gun on it's fittings? YES, THERE ARE GREASE FITTINGS ON OUR VOLKSWAGENS!!!!!!!!! I've had Lucille (the split window bus) now over 3 years and I am sad to report I have not greased her the first time. Go agead and throw rocks at me but remember "people who live in glass houses should not throw rocks". We have been spoiled by the lack of grease fittings appearing on newer cars but our beloved Volkswagens still have them. The really disgusting part of this, is I have two grease guns, one air driven and the other a hand pump model.

What brought all of this to light is yesterday, Kyle Guthrie, Russ Jackson and I spent the better part of the day putting the bushings and new pin in the center of Russ' front beam on his 78 Westy that is a main control point for his steering. He had almost a full half of a turn of play in his steering wheel. I honestly do not see how he was driving his Bus. The part itself cost almost $30 but he says it would have been worth twice that for the improvement it made. When we got the old pin out, it was bone dry and that was the reason for it wearing out. Should have never happened.

We can plan a greasing party (after the show) and try to elimate some problems for someone else.

Don't hug your VW today, GREASE HER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Grease?  Grease?  We don't need no stinkin' Grease!  . . . at least not on a Stuper Beetle.  All rubber bushings and sealed for (extra short) life tie rod ends and ball joints.

Oh, wait, I forgot about the wheel bearings . . . when is the last time you cleaned, repacked and adjusted your wheel bearings?

When is the last time you oiled your wiper shafts and pivot points?  What about your door hinges?

When is the last time you changed your oil, check your points, adjusted your timing and adjusted your valves?

When is the last time you adjusted your brakes?  I just adjusted the front brakes on Joy's convertible a week or two back.  I know for it had been way too long since I've done it because the adjusters are frozen up.  Back one's still are.

ALL of this stuff is supposed to be "routine" maintenance.  We could probably all do a better job keeping up our beloved Volkswagens.  I KNOW I could!   :)
